    Catching the Brown Marmorated Fartbeetle

So, the stinkers have really been crowding the screen door the last few warm days. They wait around the outside edge until I open it to go outside for a smoke, or let the dogs out, and then they try to get past me. The site of all those stinkers perched on that screen got me thinking about a...

Vote for the best Halloween candy

How can they have a Halloween candy poll without Brach's candy corn?

    A Letter Request

There's a lot to be said against cash too. You have to get it from somewhere. It can be stolen, lost, or destroyed. It can be a vector for transmission of disease agents. It's expensive to produce and replace when it wears out. I was in the card industry for a long time too, on the software...

    I'm sorry

No way I'm throwing a piece of carpet over that and climbing over it to do my long-planned evil work. That would be way too much trouble.

    Dang It!!

When I was oystering on the Chesapeake I lost mine one night after we unloaded. I didn't figure it out until a couple hours later when I went to pay the tab for my food and beer at a local joint on Tilghman. I went running back down to the boat and found the wallet sitting almost exactly half on...

    Dang It!!

I'm sorry to hear that, but on balance I'd have to call getting the wallet back without the money a decent outcome.

    Dumping cable tv

They'll survive. Stock price has a lot more to do with the street's gambling than actual company performance.

    Dumping cable tv

I assume you'll be keeping the Internet? We're still basic cable subscribers here because my wife and kids have shows they like, but for me personally I never watch it. I have a $7.99/mo Netflix sub that gives me access to more content than I can possibly consume (I'm just finishing up the 177...

Walden, or Life in the Woods

No more than civilized people anywhere have wanted, for a few thousand years now, to give up their established habitation and productive fields for Thoreau's vision of heaven as a woodland hunter/gather :). Hey, where would we be without our few, but always highly entertaining, incurable romantics?

    Around Atsion And Other Things

Wow, that's a lot of foam. I've seen it pack up along the edges under the trees here and there on the Mullica, the Batsto, and the Oswego, but never anything like that. Has to be related to the heavy runoff from Irene and Lee and the general wetness of the last few weeks. I'd love to know...

    Webster's Second

Oh I do have mixed feelings, and though I used to haunt used book stores and estate sales I don't much anymore. I have too much crap as it is. In any case, I draw a line between books I buy to read, and books I buy to own. Books that I just want to read I buy on the Kindle if I can. But I am...

    Webster's Second

I completely understand the attraction. I've scooped up a few old dictionaries myself, although your new acquisition is a cut above anything I own. That's a masterpiece of the bookbinder's art.

    Hurricane

We made it through the storm without a flicker, and then lost power yesterday at 10:30 AM and just got it back a little bit ago. Apparently something in the valley was flood damaged and finally rolled over. Here's a thread with some pics of what Long Valley looked like Sunday morning...

    Hurricane

Going by the official NWS forecast for our area, as of 1:00 PM, they are saying tonight we'll have winds 34-44 with gusts to 55, and up to 4" of rainfall. For tomorrow they're saying 45-55 gusts to 70, and another 4". This may be no Katrina, but it's going to cause a boatload of trouble up here...

    Hurricane

Irene has the potential to be very bad for the shore and coastal areas. It doesn't look like the category 4-5 screamer that relocates Barnegat Inlet, but there are going to be 100+ mph winds and a significant flood surge. If I had a house in those areas all the crap I care about would be on the...

    Found a monument

My feeling is that those marks belong to the federal government, not to the state of NJ, so you had every right to act on the permission the feds gave you. It would have been an interesting conversation if you'd been stopped, though.

    Revisiting the Lawrence Line Stones

People make bad luck sometimes. One way to make it is driving out across a field of tall grass and weeds without any idea what is beneath you. On another note... great pictures of the Lawrence stones, Guy. Too bad about the one that has broken up, but at least you have recorded it for posterity.

    Forest Fires and Survival

Well, I'd like to think I would stay alert and on my toes, not panic, and move along the fireline looking for a place to get upwind of it. That has to be the number one desirable location. If you can't get upwind of it, then I guess you're in survival mode. Find a creek and duck.
