    Dirt bikes!

All of these things: riding enduros, watching birds, looking for interesting plants or ruins, are human activities that have nothing to do with the plants and animals that make up the woods. To say that one group of humans "has nothing to do with the pines" when they ride an enduro, is to imply...

Sure called it wrong this time

Up here too! About the size of robin's eggs.

    Dirt bikes!

The preservation of the forest _requires_ that we be tolerant of other uses. And to be honest with you, nature and history lovers have nothing to do with the pines, either.

    Misty March Morning

Yeah I have to chime in on the dog photo as well. Really nice image.

    Hanover Furnace to Callico, 3-28-09

There was less remaining than I had thought Scott, but maybe more than we have any right to expect given everything the site has been through. I meant to mention it in my first reply Jerseyman, but you have absolutely got my interest peaked now. I'll look forward to hearing more about this...

Yes, that was right around the time that Noah realized a larger boat would be needed.

    Burlington Island and Jessup's Grove

Lenape village? Meh, I hope they just leave it alone. I'm sure that hope is a forlorn one, though.

    Hanover Furnace to Callico, 3-28-09

I'm afraid I don't. It's right off of Lenape Trail if you have a mind to go look :). I assume questions of ownership became moot at approximately the same time that the unit was bent around that tree.

    Hanover Furnace to Callico, 3-28-09

Thanks for the info, oji. I am sure it is not the pavilion Beck saw, as he described that one as being in very poor condition at the time, which was I believe in the 30's. I entered the railroad right of way off of 70 and just poked around. I did not see any foundations, but as I said there...

    Hanover Furnace to Callico, 3-28-09

Thanks for all the comments, guys, and as always, Jerseyman, thanks for filling in the gaps :). PancoastDrifter, unless I miss my guess that is regular old jersey sandstone, a close relative of bog ore, of which there is quite a bit within hauling distance of the barrens.

    Hanover Furnace to Callico, 3-28-09

I originally planned to call this post "Brindletown to Callico," but in the end that would not be a true description. I set out yesterday morning to visit several spots, the first of which would have been the spot on the lake not far from Hockamick where Beck described a crumbled dance pavillion...

last day of winter first day of spring

Great pics Grendel. Reading of your encountering the shelter reminded me of a similar experience years ago in the woods in New Hampshire. I was about five or six miles in and came upon a lean-to, and an old battered tent. The site was pretty trashed, lots of detritus of daily life lying around...

    McPhee

They're all that, and also clearly one of the ancient streams from which American literature flows. Have to give credit where it's due. I have a volume of TNY cartoons from the 50's through the 70's, and it's truly amazing to see how the content of that one publication reflected and highlighted...

    Vandalized Trestle

Geez, this woman is a whack job. Definitely needs to be stopped asap. Someone's going to break a leg or worse.

    McPhee

I was introduced to McPhee years ago when I read "Waiting for a Ship" at a time when I was myself waiting for a ship. He's one of my favorite nonfiction authors.

    Vandalized Trestle

Guy, may I suggest you edit out the pictures of the woman and dog walking? Many lurkers or surfers will not read far enough to know she isn't related to the problem.

    Sawmill Locations

What an awesome post, Guy. Thanks for taking the time to post all of those. Gives me a few new targets for this season's wandering.

Anybody with access to a tow vehicle...?

Burned down the liquor store. Burned down the liquor store. John Law burned down the liquor store. He burned down the liquor store. That bootleg whiskey, where we gonna go?

    MIKE ROWE in the pines!

    unnecessary pollution

Sigh. I'm going to have to start using the :) emoticon again, even though it's like laughing at your own joke, and I still think Gabe won the thread with "Hello, bot", over which I still chuckle these many hours since.
