    Is this fast food?

I could eat one, but I don't think I would enjoy it. The meat-to-other stuff ratio is too high.

    The Slag Thread

I would tend to agree with that, but I don't know enough to rule it out completely. For example, how was the metal heated in the forge?

    Ruins off of Oswego Rd

My friend and I poked around there last summer. I don't know what it was, except that there are clearly the remains of one large rectangular building that was consumed by fire, and from the electrical fittings and whatnot that remain it seems to have had a commercial purpose.

    The Slag Thread

Fascinating, Jerseyman. Thanks for taking the time to transpose those texts. Like Ben I was surprised by the idea that the more vitreous slags came from colder furnaces. But reading that closely it seems like other factors, such as acidity, also come into play.

    Forked River Mountain

I like your toys, Boyd :). Earthscape is very cool. I could almost see switching to an iphone for that.

One mother of an ore pond and something else?

Awesome pics, Jeff. The color is identical to that in a pit near Long Causeway that I was exploring a few weeks back. It really stands out. I sure think that you're holding there is slag, but where it came from... you wouldn't think they would take the trouble to transport it far from the...

Yes to the first. Maybe to the second :). Shoot me a PM and let's chat about where you're trying to take it.

Nice comments in that thread, Ben. Go get 'em.

Two Wheelin In The Pines ?

Yep, that's a great way to put it, and so the average full-size pickup is just an extreme example, with all the weight in a lump over the front wheels. I almost never need 4WD in the FJ. Occasionally in some really loose sand like the stuff just east of Quaker Bridge.

I saw some issues too. I think it's just hiccups in the servers on their end.

Two Wheelin In The Pines ?

Yeah, that's a tough spot, as are some of the roads southeast of Hampton, the sandier areas to the northeast and up in Forked River, etc. I agree 100% with what Guy said: you're actually better off in a car than in a 2wd truck. Having only rear-wheel drive and not much weight sitting on top...

A few questions about a Carranza Memorial to Apple Pie Hill hike

In my opinion you'll be fine with shorts and repellent if you stay on, and well on, the trail, and you can get your daughter to do the same. However, the abandoned railroad right of way that you mention is another story. Those are fairly overgrown in places, and I would wear long pants.

    Bear

We get along pretty well with our bears up here in the highlands. They scare the occasional housewife, and one almost made me drop a circular saw once when I was working in my back yard, but other than that I would have to say the deer have a much larger negative impact. Speaking of bears my...

    Trip to Beaver Bog

Great pics. I've seen those lizards a few times, in almost the exact same setting (sandy, dry, lots of deadfall around). Heading down for a day tomorrow, so I am hoping the weather continues nice.

That is a sweet machine, Tom. Congratulations! That's easily my favorite 4x4 of all time. Such a classic shape.

    1st Time to Jemima Mt

Yes, that looks like the southern of the two eastern approaches to the hill, although it gave me pause at first because the sand is quite a bit lighter than I recall from my last visit. Probably it has just dried out. I don't know as the other little bumps in the vicinity have names. They...

Samuel Bartram Richards dead at Age 76

Great read, Jerseyman. Thanks for posting it. I wonder if the rapid completion of the initial survey, as well as the compliments that attended the quality of the railroad's construction, doesn't represent the relative ease with which the flat plains of S. New Jersey were crossed?

    Cicadas

So they are not the same insect? I need to read up a little then.
