    Fall/Winter Stone Searching 2021/2022

Guy, I always look forward to reading about your adventures in the woods. My guess is that there are many folks here who enjoy seeing what you discovered even though we rarely have anything to contribute or add to the conversation. PLEASE keep it coming! For what it's worth, the early deeds I...

    Fall/Winter Stone Searching 2021/2022

Incidentally, A. B. Moore and his wife Achsah Bozarth founded the cranberry bogs at Moore's Meadow. I guess the deeds you were looking at were related to that property of some nearby land. The interesting arrangement of the bogs at Moore's Meadow is due to his many children each getting...

    Fall/Winter Stone Searching 2021/2022

Very cool Guy! I have done some fairly extensive research on the Friendship Saw Mill and while Aaron B. Moore certainly owned a share of that enterprise, I do not believe he ever made his residence there. Aaron was probably raised at Fox Chase, a farm and tavern that once stood on the site of...

    Where is this?

Teegate, you never, ever, disappoint! Great stuff. I have been driving past this spot on a regular basis for 45 years and I can't drive past without glancing.

    Where is this?

The remains of the Shiloh Gun Club. Route 532 halfway between Tabernacle and Chatsworth. Built in 1946 on the site of the old White Horse Tavern. Private property.

    Where is this?

It is fascinating to me that deer were nearly hunted out of existence by 1900. In 1901 there were only 20 legally shot deer in the entire state! Fish and game prohibited hunting until 1909 and began releasing "imported" deer into the pines hoping their population would increase. As the herds...

    Wharton State Forest Marker

Teegate, just curious if you know whether the "L" on the stone stood for Lippincott or Little or for some other past landowner?

    Chatsworth Lake

The water level at Chatsworth Lake is down several feet. A large percentage of the lake bottom in now high and dry. It appears that much of the sand where the spill way runs has been washed away. I wonder if it will be an easy fix or something that may take some time to repair. Not only is...

    Where is this?

I just drove past it today. On the Tabernacle-Chatsworth Road (532) not far from the old White Horse Inn site. Opposite side of the road from Paisley.

    Is Carranza Rd open?

There is a major paving project happening on 563 from above Speedwell to near Jenkins. Traffic is only allowed in one direction and 15 minute waits for your chance to go are common. If a driver came out to 563 from Friendship they would likely cause a major traffic issue. My guess is that the...

    Herd's Cabin

Teegate, My calculations put it in the same spot. The lidar that you and Boyd provided leave little doubt that you've found Reeve's Stone Island. Looking forward to hearing if the well at Herd's Cabin is lined with stone. Incidentally, there is no indication that a person named Herd ever...

    Herd's Cabin

The well is mentioned in an 1810 deed so the locale goes back at least that far. One of the indentures I looked at mentions Reeve's Stone Island nearby. This was surely an outcrop of ironstone (sandstone). My guess is that the well must have been lined with this readily available material...

    Herd's Cabin

Very, very interesting post Guy. Really cool that the well was still there. The find raises many questions. I wonder who Herd was and why he had a cabin there. I found a few other references to old cabins in the pines including one near Penn Swamp dating to the 1700s. Incidentally, the...

    Metes and Bounds

Almost all of the 3000 acres lay on the west side of the West Branch. The eastern boundary line passed within 4 chains (less than 100 yards) of the forge dam. The property seemed to have extended to the north as much as it did to the south. Subsequent owners expanded the tract so that it...

    Metes and Bounds

I do this all the time. The latest was two days ago when I was trying to determine the extent of the old Union Forge Tract. What never fails to amaze me is how many of the current property lines in the pines are relics of original surveys made in the mid-1700s. In the case of Union Forge...

    Metes and Bounds

Centuries ago individual surveyors would have their own unique way of marking trees that they used as reference points in a survey. The number of slashes, etc. helped identify which surveyor "ran the line". I will try to find it and post.

    Metes and Bounds

We will probably never know if the "cabin" was traditional or influenced by the Swedes. Perhaps the word Batsto is not of Indian origin after all. Thanks!
