    Chatsworth Atv park

I think that if a road is maintained and graded by the State (or other public entity), unless there are specific signs prohibiting access, that road is for the use of ALL registered vehicles, and common sense should prevail. Roads like Friendship-Speedwell or Quaker Bridge among many others, are...

    Chatsworth Atv park

The Pine Barrens aren't unique to this sort of thing - I remember snorkling in the Keys, where much of the coral was dead, mostly due to unknowing boaters. The reefs are a source of life for many microscopic animals, which in turn are a source of life...and so on. Many years ago, I jetskiied in...

    Decoy Show Hat Pins

These hat pins appeal to a small but fervent group of collectors. The three I have are the Ocean County Decoy and Gunning Show's first 3 issues, 1997, 1998 and 1999. Actually the first pin issued (1997) was the last year it was called the Barnegat Bay Decoy and Gunning Show. I have been told by...

    Chatsworth Atv park

Maybe what's needed is more education. I know that when my own daughter went to school (in the Pinelands area), she didn't get much of an education on the importance of preservation and the delicate balance of nature, much less the importance of the Pine Barrens in history. I enjoy off-roading...

    First snow!

Here in my 1/2 acre of paradise in Barnegat (west of the GSP), it's snowing big fluffy flakes and is sticking to the streets now. Here's a photo of a mountain laurel getting a blanket of snow in my yard: It's a great night for a hike!

Welcome to the fall color show! Part 1 - Rockefeller State Park

Several calendar-quality photos in the group - gorgeous! I agree about the leaves still on the trees- seems like they were all gone by Thanksgiving in years past.

    New Jersey: The Green State?

The carbon footprint number in the article is reported as a PER CAPITA, so isn't comparing NJ, which is #1 in population density per square mile in the country, to other states with much lower rankings, wrong somehow?

    Whitesbog building collapse

I agree that our State parks and forests are way understaffed and lacking attention. Places like Whitesbog, Double Trouble, even Harrisville and other lost towns should be protected from both natural and human erosion. It seems to me that Referendum #3 on next Tuesday's ballot, the "GREEN ACRES...

    Refreshing the Soul

Beautiful photos, reflecting the miracle of nature. My mom is 87, and I'm "it", so I can relate. It sounds like your mom is in loving hands. The Pine Barrens have a way of restoring the soul and spirit; the day after 9-11, I went out to Wells Mills and sat on the floating dock at the lake...

Cranberry Harvest at Double Trouble State Park

Double Trouble S.P. in Berkeley Twp. is a great place to watch the harvest up close, and Jeff Lipman, owner of Jeffrey's Branch Cranberry Co., is happy to have visitors watch his crew as long as they don't get underfoot. On Monday (10/8), they'll start on the bogs located off Dover Road...

    Chiggered again

I got more chigger bites today at Double Trouble watcing the cranberry harvest, in spite of all precautions. I asked a few people watching if they knew about chiggers (their kids were roaming in the grass), and they had no clue. Told 'em to take hot showers, and get CHIGARID! No, I don't have...

A PBX Hike, The Warren Grove Wildfire 6 Months Later

I was in my mom's overgrown back yard today, and got 20 or 30 bites, my second bout with 'em in 2 weeks. The VERY BEST cure for "the itch" is CHIGARID. It's got camphor, phenol,, menthol, collodion (the liquid bandaid) and eucalyptus oil. Costs about $3; I found it in a pharmacy. Instant relief...

    Cranberry Harvest

The cranberry harvest began today at Double Trouble State Park in Berkeley Twp., and will go on 3 - 4 more days, according to park officials. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested. I hope to get some good photos tomorrow!

    Cloverdale Cranberry Farm

That's good to hear, German. Between Cloverdale and Wells Mills, the powers that be in this neck of the woods seem to making some good decisions when it comes to open space preservation in Ocean County. I just hope it continues. I heard the owner took one third of what she could have gotten...

That's a real compliment, coming from you! Thank you. Boyd's books are my bibles when it comes to ID'ing.

    Cloverdale Cranberry Farm

Ocean County bought this 80-acre former cranberry farm in Barnegat in 2004, and plans are to make it into an interpretive park. Personally, I like it just the way it is, but at least it was saved from development! "The Old Homestead" in early spring. The old work barns. There's also...

A PBX Hike, The Warren Grove Wildfire 6 Months Later

All the photos were great - I wish I could have gone! I did go out to 539 the day after the fire. For comparison, here's what the area looked on May 17th. Here's a a pinecone opened up by the heat of the fire. If you look closely, you'll see a seed that hasn't yet fallen out.

    Digital Camera Advice Wanted!

Thanks, Bill - this gives me something good for comparison, and I've heard good things about Fujis in the past. My current camera gives me pretty good shots, like this Autumn Meadowhawk I found at Pakim Pond, but I guess I'm looking for more depth, more dimension, or just something special. Next...
