Friend bailed; Thoughts/feelings on solo backpacking?

I hiked the Appalachian Trail a few years back, sometimes in groups, sometimes alone. I think it is entirely safe to hike alone provided you are in good health and are confident in your skill level. Chances are, you'll have a cell phone signal most of the time you're out anyway, and you will...

Pine Barrens water safe to drink?

You can either boil the water OR use iodine, whichever is easier for you. I've always used the iodine, because I'm impatient with waiting for water to boil when I'm thirsty. According to the CDC's website...

Pine Barrens water safe to drink?

In order to be safe, I would suggest you get a simple, compact water purifier that will get rid of bacteria, viruses and parasites. I have an MSR WaterWorks purifier that works great, and was under 100 dollars when I bought it from REI about a year ago. I've seen people drink the water in...

    Harleigh Cemetery, Camden County

Yes, I must go back there again -- we had only about 20 minutes to look around as it was in the middle of the work day. Pretty amazing place though!

    Harleigh Cemetery, Camden County

A few days ago at lunch break, some co-workers and I visited Harleigh Cemetery in Cooper River Park (Camden County). While we’d gone specifically to see Walt Whitman’s grave, I was more fascinated with the monument for William Joyce Sewell (Civil War General), which is an extremely elaborate...

    Unique Way Of Removing Ticks

Yes! In a similar vein, I carry around a roll of duct tape with me (my favorite multi-purpose tool) and capture the ticks on the tape. Then you just fold it up and throw it out. I have yet to find a better way to get off the tiny ones, especially when you accidentally tromp through a nest. Ugh.

    Delaware Archaeology Month.

May is Delaware Archaeology month, and there are a ton of free events, digs, talks, etc to be seen all around the state. Oddly enough, some of them are about New Jersey. Anyhow, here is the link: http://www.delawarearchaeology.org/2006_calendar_of_events.htm I'll be doing the...

A Late Invitation Is Better Than No Invitation At All.

Hey all. I have recently returned from an exile to Delaware, er, I mean an excavation in Delaware. Nonetheless, in part to celebrate my return to the Garden State and in part to celebrate my 28th birthday (good grief, I am old), I am getting together with friends on Saturday night, April 22nd...

So you're by yourself on your birthday?

Happy Belated Birthday! I am planning in advance, incidentally, to spend my 30th birthday alone, as I intend to pretend it hasn't happened at all. :)

A Very Boring Thread That No One Will Read.

Ben, I think, however, there is a distinct and definitive difference between physical isoloation, in the sense of being "rural," and cultural isolation. People in the Pine Barrens throughout the 18th-early 20th Centuries were both politically aware and active, they were active consumers of...

A Very Boring Thread That No One Will Read.

Some years ago, when I was taking a course with Dr. David Orr, Dr. Audrey Horning came to guest lecture for a day. For some time before that, I'd known I wanted to focus on Pine Barrens archaeology, and I'd known that I'd wanted to "reinvent" the popular cultural/historical view of the people...

Weird electronic mishaps in the pines

I've had compasses go crazy in the Pines, wherein the arrow just spins, never finding north. I think it is because of the limonite more than the aliens though.
