    Archaeology Arena!

I am so incredibly pleased that this forum got called an "arena," as it fully conveys the gladiatorial glory of my profession. :meatwad: (And there is absolutely no reason as to why I should have added Meatwad in there, except for that he is adorable and funny.)

    Exploring Hampton Furnace and Atsion

Nancy, Many furnaces produced cannonballs, not just Batsto. During the War of 1812, New Jersey's iron furnace production peaked. I would think it doubtful that you found a "piece" of a cannonball, however, unless it had been one with a fuse in it to start. Even so, they are generally...

Things that shouldn't be done in the Pines.

Someone once did a study in state parks about the chronology, cultural affiliation and preferences of "party sites" in the parks based on pop-top distributions. I can't recall off the top of my head who it was though. All I know is that I have a pop-top/pull-tab identification chart, which I...

    Interesting Stats for February

Hrm. I thought that this list just meant queries people did in search engines that gave a link to this site, not people that actually clicked the link to enter the site. Which brings me back to being marginally infamous then! Yippee!!!! :) All publicity is good publicity, that's my...

    Interesting Stats for February

No one loves me. :( I'd forgotten that I'd searched my own name on Google recently because I was looking for the link to my father's obituary, and it had the phrase survived by "Ariadne, etc..." Alas, I am not famous. *Weep*

    Interesting Stats for February

In all reality, I am named after that opera. My father (God rest his soul) was a professional musician. He was performing Ariadne auf Naxos when I was born. :)

    Interesting Stats for February

I am proud and thrilled that someone, somewhere, searched my name. Because in all honesty, I am truly, truly boring.

    bear tracks

I have never seen a bear in the pines, but I've seen their poo before. At least, this one guy I work with is a poo analyst, and he said it was bear poo. Luckily, according to the professional analysis, it appears that the bear was well-fed, and therefore not hungry for archaeologists.

    Whirlwind Tour of the Pines.

Gah. Mighty Joe Young is like the Pepsi Clear of King Kong knock-off movies. Now, in my humble opinion, King Kong VS Godzilla never got the accolades it truly deserved. :v:

    Whirlwind Tour of the Pines.

Even though it was pretty cold today, and even though we started out late and had to be in early, Tom and I did a whirlwind tour of the pines today. We started at Hampton Furnace, then we went to Friendship. Also included were Quaker Bridge, Charles Wills' grave, a fly-by of the Carranza...

    Njdep Gis

Justin, Sweet! I am trying to get comfortable with ArcGIS, but in all honesty, its capabilities far surpass my abilities to use it. Hands down, however, I can't think of a better mapping system for spatial data. I would love to pick your brain on this stuff. Apparently, NJ offers some...

    Njdep Gis

The New Jersey DEP GIS site is up and running now; I'd tried to use it a few months ago but it was still not operational. Now it is. Anyhow, there are some pretty nice map layers available there, and everything is publically accessible, unlike the CRGIS site in Pennsylvania...
