    Historic Sawmill Pictures

Nice to see the shingle operation. Similar to Batsto's. Horizontal blade, blocked wood , and shinicock. I don't see a bailer for the doghair (down below the shingle station in Batsto). Wonder what wood they used in Texas? We used white cedar, (of course). I've heard of using mined wood and a...

    Male Mosquito Hawk

Nice! I've seen them before, but, as many times in the past on this site, I've got a name for them now. Thanks for the ID. ( Previously, it was just "Big Bug"):bang:

Sewell man dies during canoe trip

I agree that it's better to swim with someone, but, he was. Also, the time of the accident, did you notice it was pushing dusk? I would think he was near Batsto lake (lots of stumps), due to the time. A tragidy, none the less!

    Waiting for YOU!

I've had phyicians SWEAR to me that there is no such thing as CHIGGARS! (Let them lead the next hike!) But I know what they feel like! And, by the way, I didn't know what they looked like up 'til now, but they ain't what I'd call "purty"! We need to come up with a couple of good recipes for...

    Lake kayaking

Oswego is a launching point for the trip to Harrisville. A few folks just paddle on the lake, most continue, after a portage, downstream. The lake's big enough for a few hours of leisurely paddleing and has several sandy beaches for "wading". There is also a public, state run beach for official...

2 missing young rafters found unharmed

Good one! I know when I was working for the canoe livery, we had many opportunities to see this "Disneyland - I want to get off this ride and go to the exit" mentality. People occasionaly just got out of the canoe and tried walking out of the woods , as if it were next to the concession stand...

2 missing young rafters found unharmed

We used to go camping all over the place when we were that age. Anywhere we could go by foot or bike was ok as long as we left word with the folks. You had to respect the River though!

    Fishing this morning

We used to see them (eels) come up the tailrace at the Batsto sawmill when I worked there in the '70's. Some good sized ones too. But, any fish may bump you (what with all the oils, cremes, lotions, etc, you can't say what might attract them.) They are a tactile, opertunistic race of critters...

    Riding to Atsion in 1773

A great Line! It's easy to attribute greatness to a "cleansed lifestyle", but you need the Grit of life to truly appreciate the life and times of our forebearers - and yes, even with chiggers!

    So long Hampton Furnace Building

Iterestingly enough, some years back, I was looking at Atlantic County bridges and thier white marble info plates (who the engineer was when built / upgraded), mostly from the 1915's into the 1940's and found that a few loose or half removed ones were actually re-used headstones! The temples of...

    Born in Hermman City

I grew up with the Cramers, Ken and Betty Jane. I was just wondering why this "new" post was started now. They are part of the Pines, as is Betty's Mom (Helene),and Uncle Rod, Hollis, Court, Janice, Shirley, Gussie, and of course, Leon! They and the others will be alive in our hearts as long as...
