Looks like Ole JD made it to Texas...

Looks like a rare breed of dog. Can't remember if it is from Mexico, Central America, or South America. Think it has roots in Aztec culture.

Southern pine beetles killing trees in NJ

I saw the damage these things can do firsthand in eastern Tennessee. We were doing topo work in the woods around Oak Ridge National Lab and believe me, the damage made the work twice as hard. All the pines were either dead or dying and being in the woods on a windy day was very dangerous. I...

    Boardwalk Empire

The cussing is there but, you have to consider who they are portraying. That's the way they spoke. Doesn't mean you have to like it though.

A Creek And Three Branches, A PBX Hike

Thanks for the great pics. Those of us who no longer live in the great state of NJ can still enjoy the pines through your adventures. Scott, the pic of the railroad tracks is cool, amazing, and intrigueing. One question: any tics? Best wishes to you and your wife for a complete recovery Scott.

    Boardwalk Empire

Well, the much ballyhooed series from HBO has had four episodes broadcast. Anybody else watching as I am? I find it a little slow but I have to say, having had family in Ocean City from the late 19th century, I absolutely love thinking of them being about Atlantic City while the events of this...

    Smart Thinking

The things that got to me is the reporter's amazement at the fact that they "even do classwork" while eating lunch in the library. That, along with the coffee bar in the library. You must be kidding me. I also think I speak from jealousy. We were happy if our milk had ice in it instead of...

    The Hut

The "Gibby" was one of the first bars I ever tried to get served in, when I was 16. My brother gave me his license and the usual command, "be cool." I was scared to death and next thing I know, the waitress is standing right over me asking what I wanted. Nerves took over and I said "Tom...

    NASCAR coming to S Jersey

When I was a surveyor, we had to do a topo of the woods around AC Racetrack for a Nascar track that was supposedly coming. That was around 97 so, I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Beautiful

When I left NJ and moved to KY, the only inspection they had was a guy coming out of his office and making sure the VIN matched. Surprisingly though, there weren't many rolling wrecks that I saw on the roads. Same here in Florida.

    Immature black rat snake

I used to know that fact when I was a kid but if I had been asked now, I might have said it was a baby chicken snake. I wonder how long it takes them to make the change. I bet that's an interesting looking snake while the change is happening. Maybe it changes over the winter.
