    Bear population spreads across NJ

Think we were just shy of 600 bears killed in NJ during the 2010 season. That should have put at least a dent in their presence. The pines definately get a bear or two every some odd years. I know a lot of old timer hunters who swear by seeing their tracks every five or ten years.

    NJ Trout season opens Saturday

Not a huge fan of the conservation area on that river, but there are some nice stretches of the river in its branches a little farther west.

    NJ Trout season opens Saturday

Hi 46er, I agree 100% on the fact that just getting outdoors is the seller for fly fishing and hunting for me. Theres a big difference from Ocean County trout fishing, which IMO is mediocre at best, and fishing a little farther north in the state. You really only have a couple rivers in our...

Hiked the Batona with Kaia :)

Nice pics. Hear any yotes at night? I haven't taken the dog on the Batona overnight yet. He's been in bear country without problems, but I hear so many coyotes by our house that I've been a little concerned to take him out there for a couple nights. Seems like you guys did just fine though.

March 2011 - How clear is the Mullica out to camp?

Cant give much info on the Mullica, but the Oswego and Cedar Creek were both pretty jammed up a few weeks ago. We had a long snowy winter and quite a few wind storms that took a lot of trees down. Not sure when the canoe liveries get out there and start hacking away, but once they do things...

    Late winter fishing

Thought it looked familiar. We've had a place in the Dacks since before I was born and the ponds and rivers are loaded with brookies. Very fun on the fly rod.

    Late winter fishing

Hewey, You catch that last big guy in Greenwood WMA? That spot looks familiar, but if its the one Im thinking of, its rather small. Nice fish.

    Recommend a Shotgun

Im a sucker for double barrels, but thats mostly for my upland bird hunting. For a great pump, check out Remington's 870.. that gun is as solid as you get for the money. The older 870 wingmasters are classics, but even their newer 870 express is as reliable as they come. They have them at a...

I need a fish before I go crazy!!!!

Ice just broke two weeks ago by me. My bet is they're still a little lethargic for spinners, but give it a week or two. Come a few weeks, they'll be active and hungry from such a frozen winter. Good luck PS. Stripers just opened on the bay and someone already won some money on an 18 pounder off...

    Fishing in Federal Waters

46er, You still fish the Ausable? Out of state NY licenses are through the roof. It stinks paying all that money along with a trout stamp, especially if you practice catch and release and dont keep anything.

    Fishing in Federal Waters

We dont have to pay. At least one thing I like from the Gov. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/newsrel/2011/11_0021.htm

    Christie: "Say no to us"

Didnt mean to ruffle feathers Ben, but I still stick to my post. I didnt start this thread, but we were discussing NJs spending. I feel his budget cut of 9.8% of the D.E.P.s overall funding is in fact an issue of the pines.

    Time to split some wood

I feel both sides of the argument have some pretty valid points here. Our old neighbor (about 1/4 mile down the road) in the Adirondacks used to burn all kinds of junk in his boiler and that used to really piss us off. Pretty sure the majority of his garbage went in that thing and it smoked like...

    Time to split some wood

Im with you.. no way Im paying for that dam propane. I've put the heat on once this winter for about 15 minutes just too make sure it still worked. I've been burning 24/7 since November. We usually go a little over 4 cords a year burning like this.

    Time to split some wood

While I love splitting wood with an axe, the amount of wood we go through would take way too much time to split all of it that way. Im definately with you on the gas log splitter (at least most of the time). Its still nice to hand-split some wood on a autumn Sunday morning, then go warm up by...

I heard 6-8 now for the Ocean County area after it turns back to snow this evening. Im always a fan of the snow, so bring it.

    Time to split some wood

Was in the Adirondacks just last weekend. -8 was the HIGH where we were, thats without wind chill. I did see Saranac Lake on the tempature map.. dam thats cold. Its been a long winter in the pines too, but I kind of like it that way until at least March. Still got plenty of firewood. Im waiting...
