    controlled burns

I don't think they burn the same plots every year. If they did it would have almost no effect on the shrub layer. The only way burns like this are (ecologically) effective is when they have a year or two off to let the duff build up. Then again I suppose it depends on whether or not...

    Forest fire on Rt 322?

not sure if it was the same one dragoncjo and I saw in the distance, but there was one in close to 72, then another off 539 (NW of webbs mills) and ANOTHER moving from there towards lakehurst. tis the season for controlled burns . . . just seems weird that they'd go through with the burns...

    Spikes in the ground (lacey)

this is clearly dangerous and irresponsible. that having been said . . . is atv (or pedestrian, for that matter) traffic allowed here? is it public land? Seems like it was set with the idea that anyone who found it (excluding the landowner of course) would be inherently be exposing...

Some pics from the past year

You may find this hard to believe . . . but I was exceedingly lazy this year on basically every level - including photography (yes I know its sooo unlike me). My version of these same animals: Different Hog: Same Pine: Same Snapper: Different Box: Different Ringneck...

    Mapsource Users:

Well, I have no intention of buying the new topo. Your project looks great (if not potentially a bit tedious for you)- good luck with it. The "grassroots" movement seems good, but its not quite there, yet. unless I want way higher quality topo maps of wyoming or maine.

    Mapsource Users:

No clue why I haven't thought of this before, but the idea recently dawned on me that I could copy the cd maps onto my hard drive - thereby not having to pop the cd in every time I want to see map detail in the program. Its also MASSIVELY faster which is no surprise, really. Here's a...

What Globalpbs can do about pine beetles!

sounds like a great idea that the local environmental agencies can't afford to act on. but here's a question . . . what are these things made of? They clearly require some sort of power source - what happens in 30 years when thousands of tiny batteries from thousands of abandoned dead sensors...

New Jersey State Program Helps OHV’ers Gain Access to Land

Okay exactly. A hunting license allows you to hunt in the manner and places hunting is allowed. Legally owning the gun doesn't give right to fire it off anywhere you feel like. Its nice that the state provides shooting ranges, but are they really obilgated? If buying old WW2 tanks and...

New Jersey State Program Helps OHV’ers Gain Access to Land

Yeah not sure how much I sympathize with the orv people . . . they generally seem pretty indignant considering they invested in a hobby knowing it was illegal in most places. Like buying a gun and then making a stink for not being allowed to shoot it anywhere you want. And really - I get...

    Cranberry Fest This Weekend

I was in Chatsworth this morning . . . any inkling I had to visit the festival was squashed during the half hour of crawling bumper-to-bumper traffic I endured trying to get through town.

"The Ecological Pine Barrens of New Jersey"

I'd say this book is worth reading. It seems pretty big on citing random facts and statistics about the barrens, and does a decent job tying together a number of ecological principles and events that shaped the area. If you're just generally interested in how the pines work ecologically...

    Mushrooms.....

yeah as a fun side-note . . . this is a pretty great reason not to eat box turtles. depending on how large a part of their diet the mushrooms are, they can be quite toxic. I have a personal theory about boxies as well . . . seems that at times their markings do a great job with camo, yet...

I've been told that the fox population at island beach recently became extirpated. am I wrong?

    Enemy of turtles

So I went looking for these things: And I found this thing: He was hugging the road - smelling for nests to raid. Between these guys, raccoons, cats, and coyotes, its a wonder there are any turtles left. Here's the video Don't be too hard on them, though. They don't...

    more herps from the pines:

Wow okay well first off thanks for the compliments everyone! Its pretty rewarding to see all the positive feedback. I've been concentrating on composition and new techniques more lately since I've pretty much hit a wall in regards to upgrading my equipment (because I'm WAY too poor to get...
