Actually that should only be needed if you have the older version of US Topo. Garmin US Topo 2008 is distributed on one DVD (instead of multiple CD's) and is automatically loaded on your hard drive the first time you run the installer.

And there is a great new grassroots movement to create free topo's of the whole US... a number of them are already available here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/

Most, if not all of these are much higher quality than Garmin's 100k US Topos.

Well, I have no intention of buying the new topo. Your project looks great (if not potentially a bit tedious for you)- good luck with it. The "grassroots" movement seems good, but its not quite there, yet. unless I want way higher quality topo maps of wyoming or maine.
