No clue why I haven't thought of this before, but the idea recently dawned on me that I could copy the cd maps onto my hard drive - thereby not having to pop the cd in every time I want to see map detail in the program. Its also MASSIVELY faster which is no surprise, really.

Actually that should only be needed if you have the older version of US Topo. Garmin US Topo 2008 is distributed on one DVD (instead of multiple CD's) and is automatically loaded on your hard drive the first time you run the installer.

Most, if not all of these are much higher quality than Garmin's 100k US Topos.

Well, I have no intention of buying the new topo. Your project looks great (if not potentially a bit tedious for you)- good luck with it. The "grassroots" movement seems good, but its not quite there, yet. unless I want way higher quality topo maps of wyoming or maine.
