    Pine Barren Sandwort (in bloom)

Actually the reason I went there that day was to see the Prickly Pear in bloom and I found few if any flowers or buds. I don't know why.

    Pine Barren Sandwort (in bloom)

If you want to see literally TONS of Pine Barren Sandwort in bloom, check out the Batsto/Pleasant Mills cemetery, right now. It's unbelievable! Plus there is Dwarf Dandelion and some unusual, probably non-native succulent-type plant in bloom too. Barry

I haven't posted here in a while because nobody else has. But I've been on a couple of outings recently and I'll post about it later, when I get the chance. Barry

    Photo's at Apple Pie Hill

Hey that's great. Neat. Can you add that to our Historical Markers gallery at the ghost town group? Thanks, Barry

    Photo's at Apple Pie Hill

Excellent. Thanks for your reply. Do you have a picture of the sign itself that is readable? I'd love to see it. I don't remember seeing it anywhere. Thanks.

    Photo's at Apple Pie Hill

Guy, There was a building ON TOP OF Applie Pie Hill? I have pictures of a foundation. But I think the foundation is AT THE BASE OF the hill. I don't have it scanned though.

    Protecting Communities from Wildfire

Hey Guy! In the plants and nature gallery in the photo section of our ghost towns club I have a picture I took of that area in the late 1980s or so. Have you seen that picture? They had to put a fence around it to keep the deer from eating the young trees.

    History of Smithville, Atlantic County??

Does anyone know anything about Smithville from BEFORE it became the "Historic Towne of Smithville"?? There is a Methodist Church there that was built in 1869, which is on the site of a Friends Meeting House from much earlier. And the Smithville Inn that is there now was supposed to have been...

    Friendship bogs history

I've been to Friendship several times and am very familiar with the cellar holes in the field by the bogs. But I've always come from Speedwell. I live near Egg Harbor City. I come up 563 and make a left at Speedwell, and Friendship is at the "T" intersection there. So from what you say I should...

    Friendship question!

Ben! Thanks for your input. Do you ever plan on putting your site back up? I really used to like it. My "group" on Yahoo has a link to your site in the bookmarks section even though your site is down. I've been hoping you will put it back online someday...

Anyone ever see any Willow Oak?

14 years ago I worked at the Chestnut Lake campground in Port Republic. While I was there I thought I saw Willow Oaks there but was not completely sure about it. I only worked there for 11 months and have not been back since I quit all those years ago. I think that's probably what they were-...

C3 and C4 Plants in the Pine Barrons

I know quite a bit about Pine Barrens plants, but unfortunately I have no idea what C3 and C4 plants are. Can you tell us what you are talking about?

Visit to Apple Pie Hill Tower

I've been inside the Batsto tower and to the top of the Apple Pie tower, but not inside. I say both of them offer great views that give you a feel for the expanse and majesty of the Pine Barrens. I can't decide between the two. By the way, Batsto is a 100' tower and Apple Pie is a 60 footer. I'm...

    ATVs

My biggest problem with ATVs and dirt bikes is the damage they do, especially when operated by irresposible riders. A road with a slope can be seriously eroded when it rains, after it is torn up by an ATV. Trucks can do the same damage. Some of the roads up Apple Pie Hill are BADLY eroded. There...

    Protecting Communities from Wildfire

Unfortunately there is no old-growth or virgin timber in the Pine Barrens that I know of. But the fact that it has again become wild, after much cutting for charcoal and after the rise and fall of towns, is great. We are lucky to have a lot of forest in a somewhat natural condition, even if it...

    My first Pine Barrens experiences

Jeff, I've never heard such a thing. But if that's true, I'd like to hear the story some day if anyone knows it. I bet it's interesting. But Forked River Mountain, the peak bearing that name, is only one of at least a couple dozen high peaks like that, heading west for a few miles at least to...

    Our Drought Situation

Yes. I noticed the artesian well at Harrisville is down to an ocasional drip. I think I remember it flowing a lot more than that. The cutting of trees and brush was done between two weekends when I was there. I think it was in March. I've never seen the ruins like that.

Anyone ever been to Albert Hall?

I've read about the place and it sounds like a lot of fun. Anyone ever been? We could hear some first hand experiences. One day I'll go up there myself and hopefully bring my parents. Thanks! For those who don't know, it's the Albert Music Hall, in Waretown. http://www.alberthall.org/

    Planting in the Pinelands

Last year after the Asters and Goldenrods went to seed I collected seedheads from various ones and scattered them in the beds where I already have some perennials. I like perennials and I especially like native plants. If native plants take root on their own, I let them grow. Last year I also...
