    Gloucester Furnace, Gloucester Landing

Jeff, Thanks. That page you mention is part of a website that's already listed in our bookmarks section. I also have the original newspaper (Atlantic City Press) article that that page was based on. (There's no "there" there.) But I'll have to re-read it. Thanks, Barry

    ATVs

Genie, Quads are not allowed on State Land (State Forests, Wildlife Management Areas, etc.). Only LICENSED vehicles are allowed on State Land. So I really don't know where you can ride without having to ask permission first.

Anyone ever see any Willow Oak?

According to some pamphlets I have, there is Willow Oak in the Atlantic County Park at Estell Manor. (That's where the Estellville Glassworks ruins are located.) Personally I've never seen any Willow Oak anywhere, and I'm wondering if anyone that reads this board HAS seen any. Thanks, Barry

    Nature and Ecosystem Forum

Don't forget the Nature and Ecosystem Forum, here at Pine Barrens Enthusiasts. I enjoy posting on it, but it seems to be forgotten by most people. (The hit counters tell a lot. It's interesting to see how many hits each post receives, or doesn't receive.)

New nature trail in our back woods.

I've been working on a nature trail in our back woods. I started it on Sunday 2/17. It zigzags a lot, but basically stays in the same direction the whole way. I made the trail because without it, it would be impossible to walk around in our back woods because of all the Scrub Oak back there. The...

    8 species of Oak

This is interesting. On the property of the "Pines" golf course at the Marriott Seaview in Galloway Township, Atlantic County, where I work, there at least 7 species of Oak, besides all the Pitch Pine. We've got White Oak, Post Oak, Chestnut Oak, Blackjack Oak and Spanish Oak. Then there is one...

    Help ID this pine tree.

Update These Loblolly Pines are in an APPARENTLY wild state, but probably aren't actually growing wild there. They were probably planted a very long time ago. There are many of them there and nearby there are some foundations and cellar holes. They are nice looking trees and it's interesting to...

Good Overview of The Pine Barrens

As far as I know, the cones of Pitch Pines can be that way, not opening and releasing seeds till fire comes. The term is "serotinous". But it's not every tree, just some individuals. I know it's not EVERY Pitch Pine that is that way because I see, on some trees, thousands of open cones, where...

    My first Pine Barrens experiences

In 1984 we did not yet live here, outside of Egg Harbor City. We were still living up in western Morris County, near Warren, Hunterdon and Sussex Counties. I came down to my grandparents' house in Barnegat for a weekend, by myself that year. I had been somewhat familiar with the Pine Barrens...

    Gloucester Furnace, Gloucester Landing

The Gloucester Furnace site is located within Egg Harbor City. But Egg Harbor is 99% woods, north of the lake. The city limits even include the site of Clark's Landing. But anyway, on Sunday 3/24 I visited the Gloucester Furnace site for the first time, even though I've lived only 5-10 minutes...

    Camping with Dogs

Bob, Check with Wading Pines Campground, which is in Jenkins. They might allow pets. It's right next to one of the State camping areas (I forget which) which is at the northern terminus of the Washington Turnpike. Check my homepage for the link to their site online...

    Good maps?

I have Marilyn's map of the Pine Barrens. It's very good, except it has one mistake on it (I can't remember what it is now though. I guess you would know it when you saw it.) I always recommend the USGS Survey maps and the maps of each county, put out by Alfred B. Patton. Patton maps are...

    Visit to Buzby's Store

Guy, I don't know if they were regulars that left or not because I didn't get the notification from Yahoo Groups when they left. I don't even know who they were. But I know that the member total jumped from 128 to 125 overnight. I know that when Bob Blanda joined, the notification took a couple...

Bog iron gravemarkers in the Pine Barrens

Jeff, That's the Green Bank Methodist Church and the Green Bank Methodist Cemetery. It's one of only 3 cemeteries still in use in the entire township. A lot of people that Father Beck talked to in Green Bank are buried there.

    Newspaper Articles

One time I wanted to read an older (a few months old) article from the Press of Atlantic City and found the same thing: you have to pay to read them. But current articles were apparently available free. I think I remember reading that about cutting down Phragmites in Lebanon State Forest on the...

    Our Drought Situation

I really don't know how much of a drought we are REALLY in. But I do know that the swamps and bogs that I've seen in the Pine Barrens are not nearly as wet as they were years ago (mid 80s to early 90s). Also a lot of the sand and dirt roads used to have many, many big puddles (which I've gotten...

    Visit to Buzby's Store

I always enjoy talking with Marilyn. She really loves the Pine Barrens. She loves to talk about the old stories and the people from long ago. And she knows books! I've got all the books you mention, including all of Beck's books about New Jersey. Marilyn's guide book has a lot of little errors...

Bog iron gravemarkers in the Pine Barrens

Guy, I have never seen that cemetery. Sounds interesting. I'm very surprised that this post about bog iron gravemarkers didn't get any responses. I thought the article about them was quite fascinating. These gravemarkers constitute a very little-known aspect of the iron-making history of our...

    Newspaper Articles

Phragmites, AKA Reeds: I've heard conflicting reports that they are native, but may not be. I've noticed they are taking over the marshlands along the Lower Bank Road that goes from the Egg Harbor Road to the Lower Bank bridge. Years ago they weren't there, that I can remember. I don't like them...

    PBE Radio: Shutdown

Sounds good. But I would need help, as well as ideas, since I don't know what I'm doing. :) I don't know much, but I do a lot of reading, and have been trying to build up my Pine Barrens/South Jersey library. I think I have most of the books on the list I posted at an earlier date.
