Preventic collars work great for ticks. Or there are monthly treats you can give your dogs (NexGard or Bravecto) that are very effective against black-legged ticks.

    Yet another tick born...

Scary stuff. Tick checks are great, but make sure your dogs AND cats are all treated, too. There are a lot of black legged ticks in NJ this time of year.

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

Fantastic! What kind of drone are you flying? We have a Phantom 2 with a GoPro camera.

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

It is specifically banned in Michigan, so I am guessing you will probably get your wish.

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

The no fly zones are unreasonably large. We are not allowed to fly at all in the city of Kalamazoo, for instance. There are some things we'd like to get aerial shots of, but we aren't allowed. Drones are not typically flown high enough to interfere with aircraft unless you are right next to an...

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

Thanks for the suggestion, I am not sure if the creek is open enough to follow, but we'll have a look on the map. I think it will be a while (or forever) until we can set the thing free and not watch it verrrrry carefully though. We have to follow it. At this point we need to keep in our line of...

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

No, still living in Michigan, but we go back and are currently very overdue for a pines day or two. No worries! We are pretty sensitive to wildlife--I don't want to a) upset any people or animals, or b) kill any bird that's defending its territory by prop strike! Gah. That would suck.

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

That is no joke! I can fly the kite. I think I'll leave the drone to him though. What drone footage would you guys like to see most of the pines? I would love suggestions.

FAA proposes to allow commercial drone use

COOL. We just got a drone and Joe is currently navigating the surprisingly steep learning curve. This video makes it look deceptively easy to fly them with a controller (rather than a pre-programmed flight). I guess that's the difference between the $2000 drone and the $10,000 drone. He has...

    Snow Fleas

I discovered a bunch of those last year here in MI. I had never heard of them either until I was out in the yard and realized I wasn't alone. They are am amazing example of a organism and its niche.

    NJ State Policy for Geocaching

This is exactly what I thought about when I read this news.

    NJ State Policy for Geocaching

When they are published, the coordinates show where they are. The approvers, I am assuming, will be the police in this matter.

    NJ State Policy for Geocaching

Whoa. My husband and I were pretty active geocachers when we were in NJ. This rule affects a great number of caches in the state, especially in the pines. We placed several while we lived there, and I think this would affect almost all of them. As a rule, I found geocachers to be pretty...

New Tickbore "Bourbon Virus" Is Deadly

I have mosquito bites. In January. In Michigan.

New Tickbore "Bourbon Virus" Is Deadly

What scares me is that we don't even understand the vector yet. Could even be mosquitoes or biting midges. Yet another reason to be vigilant about repellents and post-hike checks. And sticky rollers!

That's pretty rude to correct peoples' grammar. (People's grammar? Peoples grammar?)

A vegan goes stalking wild mushrooms in the Pine Barrens

That is what it looks like to me, too. They are good to eat and are apparently a good "beginner's" mushroom since they are pretty easy to ID and don't have any poisonous mimics, but I would still be wary. They are prized for their yummy flavor...

A vegan goes stalking wild mushrooms in the Pine Barrens

I admire people with that skill because wild mushrooms are heavenly. My sense of self-preservation, however, is too strong to even pursue knowledge of edible mushrooms. I currently have a stand of chicken-of-the-woods in my back yard that is two feet across, I am pretty sure it's the right...
