    bald eagle vs. pickerel

Osprey/Bald Eagle 46'er, that is an INCREDIBLE photo--Oh-My-God!!!!! Here in FL, you often see Eagles chasing Ospreys after the latter make a catch, the eagles relentlessly chase the O's until they drop their prey, then the E's swoop in and, well, free meal! That odd behavior, with the Eagle...

Protecting wildlife is working. Perhaps too well

Lighten up, man! Hopefully they'll figure it out soon and hold an open season on idiots. Now come on Bobbleton, if you go and do that, there won't be any New Jerseyans left to migrate south to Florida. Then again, there's a bumper sticker down here in Florida: " If it's called Tourist Season...

Protecting wildlife is working. Perhaps too well

Hunting? Hey you guys, doesn't anyone in NJ hunt anymore? I'm sure open season for a year or two would cure the problem y'all are having....but, then PETA, The Audubon Society, Anti-gun crowds, anti-hunting people, anti-anti folks would be up in arms....and eventually, of course, up to their...

    Fish Ladder in the Pines

Talking to myself A little research--seems the project came under The Army Corp of Engineers CAP (Continuing Authorities Program), section 206, which covers the Batsto fishladder---other projects have to do with restoring natural flow of ecosystems altered by the COE and restoration of eroded...

    Fish Ladder in the Pines

Where Are the Fish Biologists? This subject always fascinated me, especially the water ecosystems in the pine barrens, how certain waters will sustain just pike, and others a mixture of pike and bass. The fish ladder idea was really good---I wonder who originated the idea to put one in there in...

Clean Machine Yeah, I'm game if you're willing to pay round-trip fare from Florida! Hey, Piker Man, I thought you and Tom M were the PineBarrens trash crew from heaven--I remember seeing you guys with two canoes FILLED with bottles, cans, baggies, transmissions, dud bombs, license plates...

    Fish Ladder in the Pines

Dam Dave--I have always assumed that the dam has been there since the 1700's when the mill and forge were put in---albeit the creation of Batsto Lake. The fish ladder was installed last year. Skinny dipping and eels just gives me the shivers, man!

    Fish Ladder in the Pines

Last fall I visited with my friend Tom, and we went to Batsto Village. Tom showed me a fish ladder that was installed at the dam ( he actually helped pour the concrete!) whose purpose is to restore the ancient pathway for spawning bronze-back herrings, and possibly other fish species as well. I...

Things that shouldn't be done in the Pines.

Litter Whenever my friend Tom and I went canoeing in the pines, we would bring trash bags to cart out the trash. In Juniper Prairie Wilderness Area (Ocala Forest, FL) all canoeists are forbidden to take disposable articles--water jug or canteen is OK, but no cans or bottles, to keep the creek...

    great horned owls

My son and I camped at Lower Forge once in March and a Barred Owl landed directly over our tent, we were just dozing off when it let out with its siren-like hoot---boy did that scare us awake!! My son nearly jumped through the tent roof from a supine position, instantly!

Why are so many folks afraid of the pine barrens at night?

Speaking Trees I once had a tree talk to me about his dreams, so he "boughed" his "crown", "uprooted" himself from his homeplace, and "branched" out seeking new endeavors, thinking drama or opera would be his forte, all he could do was "bark" out orders, which insulted many humans, so he drove...

Have you seen or heard something you cant explain?

Well, being a believer in the God of the Universe, and in creationism, I see the evidence of God in creation all the time, and feel blessed by it, and feel assurance and hope. I think this forum should be a place where anyone with a particular belief can come without being belittled for their...

    New Article on Martha Furnace.

I quit smoking 31 years ago. My friend Tom and I flew into a remote lake in northern Maine to fish, canoe, and explore. I made the decision on a purely philosphically honest inquiry: If I am so pro-ecology, for clean air and water, pure forest air, nature at its best, why am I polluting my body...

Bush opens up backcountry trails to vehicles

Far as I can tell, people have been a part of the wilderness experience from time immemorial---Native Americans, for example. Granted, they did not zip around in jeeps, dirt-bikes, SUV's, and four-wheelers---but they got around all the same, probably preferring to go where the game thrives...
