That is most likely a shadow from a tree on the far side, I was facing west roughly 2 hours from sunset.

I know that spot. That's an old cranberry farm. Currently it's also a park police gun range and seems to be a collection site for old park system signs. Aside from the giant slab floors, there's also some rusting farm equipment and some bof drainage structures and pipes in that area.

I found one of those in Lakehurst, just south of the post office. A tree had fallen over and it was sitting in the exposed roots. Good find!

If by canal you mean the straight line from the end of the raised trail to cedar creek, no. If you mean the tail of the mill race rejoining the creek, then yes.
