    Boyd, the purpose of the controlled burning is presumably to control (eradicate?) the phragmites on the island. However, fires have been observed to result in an increase in shoot densities. Supposedly, however, controlled-burning can be effective when the area is immediately flooded...

    Hi Bot, Burning leaves/branches is a viable means to ridding one's self of the waste. When I lived with both of my parents and was still in high school, we would burn our tree/shrub clippings, because throwing them into a landfill, in plastic trash bags, is completely counter intuitive...
