    Carranza and Tuckerton

Looks like we had a left front off the ground there. Some deep breaths were likely consumed by all involved.

    Carranza Road

It's a dual-edged sword, isn't it? One of the reasons why we have so much access to the pines is that so many of these roads (trails?) are still actually township, county, or state roads. That means they have to maintain them to some minimum standard for unimproved ways, and it also means that...

    Chigger?

Perhaps it was just a tick that got his cutters in and got knocked off or something. I know I never saw anything on that spot. Seems to be subsiding a little now.

    Chigger?

This might be something else then, although I never saw anything attached there. Ticks after removal leave me red and itchy, but this acts like a tiny localized infection, that itches a lot :). Anyone care to guess what it was?

    Chigger?

I never saw the bug, if that's what you're referring to. The lesion itself is about 1/8" in diameter, and there is just the one. I would post a pic, but I didn't want to ruin anyone's breakfast :).

    Chigger?

So we returned from an expedition on Saturday to Mt. Misery and over to the Forked River Mts, finishing up in the wooded areas behind the lake at Howardsville (very narrow roads, heavily overgrown, will post pics and a trip report as soon as I get them processed). I noticed an itchy bump on my...

    Amatol on earth

Excellent, Jerseyman. Thanks for posting the cards, as well as the background. In looking at aerials of the portions of Southern New Jersey from Amatol south I've noticed a number of areas where you can see the grids of old roads in a dense formation, and in one or two of these spots some of...

    Amatol on earth

That book is very interesting. If you look at the overall site diagram on page 13 and then compare with the satellite imagery you can still see the rail lines connecting the town with the plant to the west, and most of the sidings associated with the bunkers there.

    Micaja S Rd.

You sort of have to live with pinstripes if you're going to drive in the pines, imo. My FJ has less than 2k miles on it and already sports its fair share on both flanks. Wax will make them a little less visible. Meguiar's Scratch-X + elbow grease + a good wax will make them even less visible...

    Thinking about Aserdaten

Thanks for the tip, Guy. It's always nice to put a name in place of the question mark in my file :). That story makes a lot of sense given what's there. The corrugated metal on the top of the pile must have been from the last gun club. I'm assuming fire got it? Edit: I see it on the map you...

    Thinking about Aserdaten

Very interesting stuff. You can still see most of the line of Dutchman's in the satellite views, and it has a definite kink in it. The last time I was up there we cruised right by the 3-way where Aserdaten is shown on the old topos, and stopped at the next 3-way north, mistaking that for the...

Aerial photo's "Then & Now" - 56k Beware, contains big images

Thanks for posting these, Guy. Really interesting to see these places in the 1931 aerial view, especially as I visited some of them just a couple of days ago. After my research I ended up plotting Callico almost exactly where they have it labelled on the 1931 image. I don't recall the exact...

    ticks

If there was heavy rain then that's certainly what we benefitted from. I didn't see anything but spitting on the way down the turnpike, and there didn't seem to be much standing water (other than the permasinks) on our route.

    ticks

Just by way of a report, we wandered all over the area between APH and Washington today, and the ticks were _much_ less severe than up by Forked River Mt. and Aserdaten.

    missing person in pine barrens

I'm very sorry to hear that this has turned out as it has. Our thoughts are with Colin's family and friends.

    Berries

We brought back a quart or so of beautiful blueberries today, just from casual picking during a long trip south from Apple Pie Hill through Friendship, Hawkin Bridge, and over through Washington and Mount to Quaker Bridge. Sort of a mix of true wild berries and some plumper cultivars with short...

    new interest

I'm reading Ms. Solem-Stull's book now. Not far enough in to give much of an opinion. I did find it interesting that she makes an offhand complaint about vandals and relic hunters in the intro, and then stuffs the book with maps to towns and ruins. I guess she doesn't expect the wrong sort of...

    An embarassing problem

I think I agree for normal hiking. In long marches under hot conditions the military dispenses salt tablets (as do the boy scouts and other organizations) to replace the salt lost through sweat, so it makes sense that athletes might need the salts in Gatorade. I doubt the average hiker needs to...
