    Warning: This is a rant

Divorce has been normed, for sure. That's an unabashed good, I think, when it empowers someone to leave a truly bad relationship. Probably not so good when a husband and wife decide to split up a family to go find themselves or something, or a male feels empowered to make kids and take no...

    Warning: This is a rant

I have to agree with Boyd. Even just 25 or 30 years ago our lives were much different. The biggest difference is in the amount of time we have to spend getting critical things done vs. the amount of time we have for leisure. For what it's worth, I think we're in a cultural decline too, but I...

    Warning: This is a rant

It's not close to that simple, and any real discussion of the possible causes would take too long. Blaming immigrants is really kind of silly, given that our inner cities (and you bet that includes Camden) have been trouble spots for decades. All the Hispanics I know work their asses off, and if...

    Hampton Village to Munion Field

Thanks :). The photo credits go to my friends Jon and Jack, who are usually exploring with me. I have a cam too, but it's a crappy 2.x megapixel job from years ago. The close-up macro shots are usually Jon's work, since he has a new Sony 8 mp cam that takes great closeups. I save all the...

    Hampton Village to Munion Field

Had a great 40+ mile run through the woods last Saturday. As usual Jon and Jack took a crapload of pictures. A selection of them have been uploaded to a gallery here. Here are a few of the more interesting ones. The Jersey Central trestle south of Hampton Village off Rider's Switch Rd...

Hi, I'm new (to posting) here

Welcome to the site, Beachbug. I have two friends with whom I most often visit the barrens. Both of them are bug and plant freaks, so I will ask them about the field guide. Several of the members here are very knowledgeable as well. I go more for the history and the sense of exploration. In...

    Meteor shower tonight

Went out last night with the family from 12 - 1 AM. Would have stayed later but we had our 10 year-old and she was getting cold and very tired. Found a nice dark field, perfectly clear sky. Probably saw 10-15 total over that hour, with 5-10 of them being pretty spectacular.

    Sandy Ridge Wading Harrisville

Lots of sugar sand over that way for sure. The clear area to the back of what I was terming the cement plant ruins is basically a dune. Despite the rough roads, we saw a couple of street machines bombing along in the barrens on Saturday. One of them was a small white compact driven by two young...

Bah, too overcast up here in the northwest.

    Meteor shower tonight

Unfortunately we have lots of really tall trees. Might take the kids and drive to an open spot. If I heard correctly it is heaviest after midnight?

    Longest Unimproved Route

I got to wondering this evening what the longest unimproved route through the barrens is? Criteria are that it can't cross pavement, and it has to be a logical route between two places, as opposed to a route that wraps around on itself to add distance. After noodling around a bit with Google...

    Sandy Ridge Wading Harrisville

Thanks, James. Yeah, that area is a good bit further east than I thought you were originally referring to. Here is the area I was thinking of... https://boydsmaps.com/tz/#lat=39.67407&lon=-74.46104&size=l&u=4&datum=nad27&layer=DRG

Out and About Today - 8/11

That's true, and I don't mean to imply they shouldn't be there doing their job. But we were pretty obviously a trio of gray hairs, and his initial approach was a little overboard, I thought, for a public forest. Given all the trash and vandalism I would rather have them there than not, but at...

    Sandy Ridge Wading Harrisville

The road atlas for Burlington shows those roads there, and we were remarking on them as we walked around. There were two large ruins, built of cinderblock. The one on the east side had obviously burned, but I'm not sure about the one to the west. Behind the ruins is a large sloping area of open...

Out and About Today - 8/11

It was kind of humorous. We pulled in next to the packing house ruins and began to get our sandwiches out, when they pulled in right behind. That little road does loop around the ruin, so I walked back and asked the driver as he emerged whether he wanted me to get out of his way. No, he said, I...

Out and About Today - 8/11

What a gorgeous afternoon for exploring the pines. We covered 45 miles in all, starting at Atsion. We entered on Hampton Rd. and proceeded to the site of the village. Pulled up at the packing house foundation for lunch where we were questioned by a couple of nice rangers. Afterward we explored...

Is that multi-roomed ruin off of Oswego Rd. the ruins of the cement plant? We visited there this afternoon and that's what we were thinking it was.

Road to Black's Bridge blocked at 539

Don't think that curb will hold up my Toyota, but yeah, pretty wierd screw-up. Folks with cars might want to take that real easy, or not at all.

You might think that until you notice the rubber on the pavement :).
