    finally... moved to the pines

Welcome too, Stizkidz! It is a privilege to live here. We need more concerned stewards of place. Join the Pinelands Preservation Alliance, serve on your local environmental commission, show up to Pinelands Commission meetings and find out what is going on. Don't let the political entrepreneurs...

Nature's Reality - from my Back Window

Boyd, these are Pine Barrens vignettes, a la 12,000 B.C., when I was just a wee tyke (above & below). Any guesses at to where this is and who these people are? S-M

    Possible chigger bite remedy

Agreed. I cannot recall suffering such an early chigger onset, even after unusually warm El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) winters. SB's narrative sounds like spider bites to me, which can leave nasty itchy welts. S-M

The Office of Planning Advocacy is forcing Pinelands Villages to become Priority Growth Zones in its Revisions to the State Planning Rules, even though this initiative is counter to the spirit of the Comprehensive Management Plan. On March 16, 2012, I asked former Pinelands Commissioner Dan...

    The NEW Beer Thread

Bob, Complex deformations described as non-diastrophic (non-tectonic) thermokarst involutions are sometimes encountered in Pinelands sections where soils were sufficiently ice-rich and composed of differing textural components. A density readjustment occurred through mass displacement as...

    Oregon 450 sale at REI

Boyd, I bought the Montana 600 a year-and-a-half ago after consulting with you. Many thanks. Early on I developed a problem with screen-touch calibration and Garmin quickly replaced that unit (new model flaw). It's replacement has worked very well ever since. The Montana is a rugged system...

    The NEW Beer Thread

Yep, Everyone had plugs hanging out their grills. Subaru is a popular brand. HooDoo has well-made craft beer, brewed in the heart of Alaska. Fairbanks is one of the few places I can talk about Pine Barrens nondiastrophic thermokarst involutions over a beer, and don't get punched in the...

    The NEW Beer Thread

Bob, I just returned from Fairbanks, where I will be working on Pine Barrens soils with the University of Alaska (College of Engineering & Mines; School of Natural Resources & Agricultural Sciences). UAF has great expertise on cold climate dynamics not available in the lower 48 States. We met...

One way to improve dark-sky conditions and save energy is the use of LEDs. LED streetlamp aims to improve public's view of stars "Researchers believe they have come up with a new type of LED-powered streetlamp that could radically reduce light pollution."...

    Bog Iron

Bob, I know it sounds counterintuitive, but that has been the historic trend to groundwater - downward. Don't forget, lush vegetational growth proceeds wildfires. It is a robust response with high rates of evapotranspiration. Also, the climate has been steadily warming since the Little Ice...

    Bog Iron

Gabe, I went back to the original quote, which is on page 23, not 25. My bad. In its entirety, "The original heavy growth of timber covered the country and the streams and swamps carried very much more water than since the iron horse came snorting through the land, blowing sparks and landing...

Preserving Cossack History in Buena Vista Township

I just asked an astrophysicist colleague why NJ'a aurora was reddish-purple, not green like light shows up north. The difference is in the energy levels – green is high-energy emissions, red is low-energy emissions. I'll be in Fairbanks in a couple weeks and, if lucky, hope to see a better show...
