    February FROGS....

I spot spent mylar balloons in the woods all the time. I’ve unfortunately come to expect the bottles and cans tossed out truck windows along sand roads but the remoteness of the areas I find balloons always disappoints me. I always assumed that for every one I found in the woods many more made...

Historic Preservation in Wharton State Forest: A Lost Cause?

I think both schools of thought regarding the interpretive signs are justified. Such signs would benefit sincere interested visitors, as well as draw attention to those with poorer intentions. It’s the same dilemma that exists on forums such as this one, when it comes to sharing information on...

    Jeep Mighty FC

Interesting, but the Jeep Gladiator concept vehicle seems to me to be a better bet to follow up on. I know I'd buy one! :)

    Attention NJ Forest Fire Service

The term “conservation” is a broad and somewhat vague term, but basically, yes. For the purposes we are talking about here that would include managing for habitat or to maintain a successional stage of the forest. Those can be an end result of the burning but cannot legally be the stated purpose...

    Attention NJ Forest Fire Service

The same NJ air pollution laws that outlawed burning of leaves and other debris make it unlawful to conduct prescribed burns for any purpose other than fire prevention. When these burns are done, other management goals can be tied to them but they cannot be done solely for those purposes. The...

    Attention NJ Forest Fire Service

I’ve previously discussed the subject of posting on public forums with other individuals working in supervisory government positions. There is a good reason you see so few of them doing so, which mostly involves preserving their own sanity. While members of these forums have every right to post...

    The Mysterious Cow of Waretown

Kinda reminds me of the opening line from that Pawn Stars show, where the owner states that you never know what's going to be brought in. At this point I mostly measure the seriousness of incidents by how much paperwork they require afterward. I guess we have to come up with a abandoned metal...

Best Hiking in Southern Ocean County?

A call-out resulted in the nature center and phone being unstaffed yesterday while the remaining park staff were assisting the Forest Fire Service with the burn. I intended to post here that the park would be open as normal on Sunday, but I was unconcious a few minutes after getting home.

    Ticks..........

On that note, see the notice on the recreation sub-forum regarding Wells Mills being closed Saturday. Ticks will be beat down for a bit on the piece burned but it never lasts long. Their reproduction ability fills in any population gaps with amazing speed.

    Wells Mills Closed 3/10

Wells Mills County Park will be closed in order to conduct prescribed burning on Saturday, March 10, weather conditions permitting. Call the park office at 609-971-3085 on that day to confirm its status prior to visiting.

'Keep-right' law in N.J. could get even tougher

I’m all for it. In my neck of the woods the GSP left lane is usually clogged by residents rehearsing their own funeral processions and by out-of-staters who apparently do not have similar laws in their states. Nothing screws up smooth traffic flow like ignoring this law.

Controlled burn planned Sunday in Egg Harbor Township

I know it's been many years since McPhee's book was written, but my experience has been far from Brown’s characterization of Forest Fire Service staff. Maybe he had a bad encounter or two, or maybe he was one of those types with an insecurity complex when it came to someone else having...

Six Day Firearm Deer Opens December 5

Well I was in agreement that this particular week poses more risk than the rest of hunting season due to the far greater numbers of hunters, therefore greater odds of an incident than during other times, but I certainly wouldn’t refer to hunters as men trying to prove anything. Are fishermen...

Six Day Firearm Deer Opens December 5

I bought a rifle at Dixons. They are certainly the place to go for muzzleloaders. You might find a better price elsewhere but they have the knowledge and everything else you might need. You can walk out of their shop looking like Jeremiah Johnson if you want! I bought a .36 caplock for squrrel...

Six Day Firearm Deer Opens December 5

I think the danger of being in the woods during hunting season is blown out of proportion by many but I’m with you on this week. I used to avoid shotgun week and stick the solitude of black powder season until those damn inline guns ruined that season as well. Mostly waterfowl for me now.

    Glass at Batsto

One possibility, if the glass looked modern, is a type of commonly used fill material that contains ground up recycled construction or demolition debris. It is mostly concrete and asphalt but I’ve seen glass in it too. It often goes by the name “R-blend”. I despise its use in natural or historic...

    Where's the P?

I stopped by Atsion today while passing through the area and walked around the mansion for a bit. Most of my past visits were back when it was fenced in and I never got a look at it up close. One thing I looked for was the famed “P” that was supposed to be imprinted on each of the iron porch...

    Jeeps

Cool pictures! It’s such a shame that simple, rugged, easily maintained vehicles like these are not available anymore. Now the major selling points seem to be how much useless, malfunction-prone crap can be loaded into a truck, which serves mostly to increase the price while adding very few...
