    Franklin Preserve - Chatsworth

One of the reasons for the wide jurisdiction of conservation officers is the long standing principle in this country that wild game belongs to the people, not the landowner. It all goes back to that sore spot over the king and other wealthy landowners trying to bust chops of poor peasants for...

    Franklin Preserve - Chatsworth

I was told that deer hunting was allowed, but had to be done in an organized fashion, by members of clubs that were also involved in volunteer efforts on the preserve. This was a few years ago and I'm not sure if it's still their policy.

    Stupid ?

I've always found the wetlands to have the best combination of fall color from both trees and shrubs. A nice paddle on any stream or pond, with the colors reflected in the water, is my best bet for fall foliage.

    Short Canoe trip

Launch at the put-in on the west side of Batsto Lake. Paddle down to the sawmill and portage around it. Go down to the Forks and then paddle upstream on the Mullica. Take out at Rt. 542 and walk 10 minutes back to your car/truck!

    Martha bridge is out

I saw that mess back in August while dropping off my son and his girlfriend for a short kayak trip downstream. I remember not being able to tell if it was damage to existing work or a work in progress that was never finished. In any case, with the state's dire financial circumstances right now...

    Mummies for Paper?

I didn't even know they ever had "shiploads" of mummies over there. I was under the impression that mummification was something only done to the royalty or the wealthy.

Two Wheelin In The Pines ?

Back when I had the most time to explore the woods I did it in a plain old 2x4 pickup. I kept a chain and come-a-long behind the seat and felt pretty safe. Before I attempted an iffy looking puddle I just looked around first for the tree I'd need if I got stuck. If there wasn't one, I'd turn...

    Tent camping?

If you hunt or fish it seems like you need to bring a lawyer in tow as well. The laws have gotten so complex that if you meet a hard case out there he/she can always find something you are in violation of if they really want to. That’s why I try to be as polite as possible with any law...

Tuckerton Decoy and Gunning Show 9-27 and 28

The opening date for Jakes has been postponed several times, which has been par for the course for most of our recent new parks. It’s mostly been due to the contractor fixing various minor and a few major things that weren’t as they should be. Although staff from Wells Mills and Cattus Island...

Tuckerton Decoy and Gunning Show 9-27 and 28

I'll be there from 5:00am to sometime around dark both days. Feel free to stop by and say hi if you can find me. Finding me isn't always easy since I tend to not stay in one place for more than a few minutes this weekend. The Pine Barrens Jamboree is so much more relaxing. I was able to give...

    New fire roads Warren Grove

Bob, You are dead on regarding how easily a fire can jump a line or even a major road. But these lines may have been made for another purpose. I have no specific information on the work done at the bombing range but what I've learned from working with the Forest Fire Service on county park land...

    Cedar Harvesting Article

Scott, I wouldn't be surprised if we were in one or more of the same classes. I was CC class of 82, although I stuck around an extra year. I had Zimm as a TA as well. The place is totally different now. West, Kuser, Grace & Wolgast have all retired or moved on. Not sure about Jim Applegate, but...

The End of Sawmills In NJ

I’ve known a few loggers who were very good land stewards. Cliff Frazee would be the first that came to mind. While some loggers indeed do have the “cut and run” mentality, others have a long family history of managing a particular tract and do it in a responsible way, with concern for the...

    Hunting Seasons Begin 9-13-08

Aaron, my only point was that hunting isn't as easy as some people think, just because hunters have the advantage of firearms. As to its enjoyment, it has nothing to do with the killing, much as a livestock farmer who enjoys his way of life might not list the killing of his livestock as the...

    Hunting Seasons Begin 9-13-08

I’m sorry foofoo but I’m not with ya on the baiting issue. Baiting provides a concentrated food source and is not exactly the same as a natural one. In fact, baiting deer was illegal in New Jersey until a short while ago, and still is for waterfowl, both statewide and nationally. And it wasn’t...

    Hunting Seasons Begin 9-13-08

You obviously have little knowledge of hunting. Game are prey year round while hunters are predators a few days a year at most. Any advantage hunters' guns give them is more than matched by the adaptations and survival skills of their prey. Deer hunters in particular have far more unsuccessful...
