    Atsion Mansion Restoration

Reminds me a little of Foster Brooks, from the old Dean Martin Roasts.

Exactly. Have agencies do the same thing we all do with our household finances

    Better Than Google Earth?

That's the reason I've often used Terraserver instead of Google Maps or Earth. While their maps are less user friendly to move around on, the photography appears to be taken in winter and the roads are much better defined.

    Young folks interested in hiking/camping/canoeing/etc?

I'm 48 and am often the youngest member of the hikes I lead with the county. They hike my butt off too. One gentleman who participates on almost all of our canoe trips is 96 (maybe 97), brings his own canoe and usually manages to stay at the head of the group. Years ago getting older bothered...

    State Budget Axe being sharpened

I never got the closing of parks when it has happened in the past. I feel it is more to drive home a painful point than a matter of necessity. Most of us are able to benefit from the state parks without much help from the state. They already have a carry in, carry out trash policy. Emergency...

    Relic Hunter

Don't get me wrong. I'm also not judging anyone in particular. The people engaging in anything illegal are not only in the minority but also the ones least likely to make their activities public. I've spent plenty of time defending fellow hunters against sweeping generalizations as have other...

    Relic Hunter

Being a hunter, I tend to avoid judging a whole group of people who use a particular device based on the actions of a few, be it gun or metal detector. But like Largo, a little "Warning, Will Rogers!" flashes in my mind at the sight of these things being used, until the user gives me indications...

    Question?

If I remember right, those trees were chipped on site and used for either paper pulp or for fuel in a plant somewhere that has boilers that run on wood chips. Many landowners have secured farmland tax assessment based on their land being managed for forestry purposes. At some point they have to...

    I want a gun...

An air rifle is a good choice for a first gun. I'm not talking about the toy-like Red Ryder from the Christmas Story (You'll shoot your eye out kid!). There are some serious airguns out there that can cost way in excess of what any .22 will cost. The advantage of an airgun is that you can learn...

So what are you doing for Valentines Day?

My favorite waterfowl species is the Black Duck. My wife thinks I'm nuts, picking the least colorful duck with so many more colorful species out there. She would lean more towards the Wood Duck too. But having spent years hunting Black Ducks, I not only respect them for their waryness, but...

Walking along a road : suspicious activity?

About 20 years ago a buddy and myself were stopped by a Berkely Twp. cop who was actually patrolling a woods road with his squad car. We started sweating as he looked in the bed of the truck, as we were shooting clay targets on privately owned but unposted woods. He looked at the shotguns and...

    Delaware & Atlantic Canal ???

Ben, I post on a few other forums that generate that response too, and it always rubs me the wrong way. A public forum isn't just for old timers. It's for newbies too, and an old topic being dusted off can generate new dialogue and benefit everyone.

So what are you doing for Valentines Day?

When I worked at Cattus Island Park, my supervisor had a standard response when asked what we were doing for Earth Day. It was "Nothing. Every day is Earth day for us". I kinda feel that way about what I call "Hallmark Holidays". You should be treating your special someone nice every day, not on...

    Outdoors/Nature/Hiking clubs?

Hmmmm, now that you mentioned it, I just led the 7 mile Ocean Country Parks hike on the Batona Trail this Sunday. While the County's program isn't really a club, we do get quite a few regulars and lasting friendships have been made, which have spilled over to hikes and outings outside of the...

    Hunter's Missing

These incidents always give me reason to reflect on my own duck hunting. I often look around while I'm out on the bay in December or January and take note of how desolate it is compared to the warmer months. It's a feeling that can be both satisfying and frightening at the same time. A lone...

    canoe trip

I'd also be carefull going below Crowley's. Bob did specify doing that trip in sea kayaks rather than in canoes, which all but the worst winds would have little effect on. But powerboats tend to create quite a bit of wave action when not in the no-wake zones on that river. With no place for the...

Hints of Places Here and There

I tend to agree with Mark on this one, I've often debated with my wife on how much time our kids spend in organized activities. It seems like they are growing up without me having spent much real time with them, especially the very types of activities discussed on this very forum. Daylight hours...

Hints of Places Here and There

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your viewpoint) Oak Island is a part of the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge that is closed to the public. It's not easy to get to in any case, with the lone bridge across a marsh creek (that's "crick" if you live in the 609 area code.) being long...
