finding natural clay in the barrens?

I've never dug any of the stuff out myself, so I can't vouch for one site being better than another. But I'll be happy to direct you to them or show you if I'm there. There is also an exhibit on the clay industry of the pine barrens that was done back when the park opened. It is on the third...

finding natural clay in the barrens?

How much are you looking for? There are clay deposits at Wells Mills which the last owner to live there mined. Taking a fairly small amount would not be a problem, but if you were looking for a larger amount the county would frown on it.

The "March of Ives" a PBX Hike

I saw your vehicles on Stage Road today while driving on my way to the Parker Preserve with my wife and lab for a more casual walk/ dog training session. I wasn't aware of your outing, but I had a gut feeling that might be you guys! We stopped at Buzby's first to chat with Marilyn. It was nice...

    Slag vs. Pig Iron???

Being more of a plant guy, I was always a bit fuzzy on the distinctions between bog iron and sandstone myself. We talked about this a bit at Wells Mills when we gathered here. What I've always understood was that those distinctions were more related to the use of the piece of rock in question...

    Slag vs. Pig Iron???

Slag also often has a more glass-like appearance. Since slag is just the impurities that are present in the bog iron ore prior to separation in the furnace, it can vary widely depending on the mineral makeup of the particular ore being refined. Much of these impurities are silicates, so the...

    TV shows on the pines?

The very first time I watched the X Files was when someone told me that the next episode was going to be about the Jersey Devil. They pretty much got every detail of the area wrong, such as Atlantic City being nestled in the woods, but I got hooked on the series anyway.

    water proof camera

We bought a waterproof 35mm point and shoot at work about ten years ago to take on canoe and kayak trips. I'm home now so I can't tell you the make and model, but I'd doubt it is still made with the market going digital. You might try E-bay.

    Amputee hiker

Winter bow season goes to the end of the month, and I thought small game is the only other thing in season now, which might account for the shots you heard. I've seen several firearm hunters myself recently and was wondering about that. Although still open, small game is more of a put-and-take...

    Going off-trail

As a general principle, just because a piece of woodland is public property, that doesn't mean whatever agency is entrusted with its management shouldn't manage it responsibly. In some cases that may just include rules prohibiting public access. But my own feeling is that before you keep the...

    Question about Cedar Grove Park

I'm sorry to hear about your injury, Guy. After a few close calls, I started wearing clear shooting glasses when going through thick brush years ago when I worked doing wetland delineations for a consultant. I never would have thought to protect my ears. Hope it heals OK!

    Going off-trail

I'll give another perspective. Most of the folks on this forum can find their way around the woods just fine without a blazed trail. But I've had to rescue hikers twice in the last few weeks who wandered off the marked trail at Wells Mills and got hopelessly lost. The first situation was waiting...

    danger in the pines?

There have been a few times someone or something made me a bit nervous in the pines, But I was mugged twice while growing up in Paterson and had one excitement filled summer working in Central Park during college. I'll take any woods over any city any day.

    something weird

Without hearing it, I'd lay a bet on fox as well. My house backs up to a golf course and there are plenty of them living along the edges. It took me a while to figure out what the sound was. Eventually, I swalowed my fear and crept out into the middle of the course at night and switched on a...

    More work for GermanG!

The most common volunteer work is trail maintenance. Our staff is responsible for construction and maintenance of trails at several other parks as well as Wells Mills. We also use quite a few volunteers to help run special events. Our office runs the Pine Barrens Jamboree, the Ocean County Decoy...

    Tuckerton Fish Factory

It's not a very long paddle, and on a calm day or in a favorable wind it's not too choppy either. The biggest thing to be careful of is boat traffic. The channels around the factory are popular fishing spots and other boats not fishing right there are zipping by on their way to the inlet...

    Tuckerton Fish Factory

While I've explored there as well, you have to be careful. Someone answering the phone at the Coast Guard might say it's ok, but the island belongs to the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife, not the CG. I was out there twice long ago, once with a kayak, which was easy to nestle among the phragmites...

I wasn't even aware that Carousoville was part of the WMA. That is one mess that could certainly benefit from being cleaned up.

    Beware of Beaver

Speaking of beavers, I was recently took my daughter for her first kayaking experience on the lake at Tip Seaman Park. I would never have paddled there if I wasn't for looking for someplace close to take her. I guess I take it for granted because it's too close to home and too "urban" of a lake...
