    Train kills girl on ATV

I don't think it's legal for anyone to drive them off private property. Unless they are registered vehicles, they can't be on public roads or other property. That is the main tool the authorities have been using to cut down on the offroad mayhem that was plaguing the Forked River Mountain tract...

South Toms River CNJ Station Destroyed

Yes, that is the station. I'm not sure if the new bridge and related new traffic patterns was the reason however. They completed the bridge along with the new road contruction without touching the station, which surprised me, as the station was very close to some of the new road contruction. In...

South Toms River CNJ Station Destroyed

A friend just informed me that the station is gone. The structure had deteriorated greatly in the last few years, and it may not have even been financially reasonable to restore it, but as a railroad history enthusiast, I was still saddened by the news. This was one of three remaining stations...

    Has anyone come across...?

When I was first introduced to Curly Grass Fern back in 79 or 80, while in college, I was given the impression that it was an extremely rare plant, and was therefore very excited to have it identified to me. That actually worked out kinda well, as even though I've found it in many sites since...

    Say "so long" to Cranberries

I hate this topic because it often becomes so damn partisan. In other (less sophisticated :)) forums, half the people insist we are causing global warming just because Al Gore says we are and the other half is insist we are not causing it, just because Al Gore says we are. They divide causes...

    Gypsy Moth Damage

Also, Bt is not considered effective above a certain population density of larvae. I was speaking to the County Forester the other day and he told me that caterpillar surveys he conducted in several county owned tracts resulted in populations far above that density.

    Piranhas? Yikes!

Looks like I have to find a new place to take my black lab swimming! It seems some guy was fishing with his son at Stafford Forge and caught several fish he couldn't ID. He went back a second time and caught another one, this time keeping it and bringing it to a taxidermist. The taxidermist...

    Some rare sightings today

I think they are a threatened species in NJ.

    Could You Kayak

Ocean County Parks offers a two day beginner's kayak class. It is geared towards bay kayaking but you will certainly come out of it able to deal with most any situation freshwater paddling will throw at you. I don't know off the top of my head if the August class is filled however. As for...

    Some rare sightings today

Actually, Bob's bird looks more like a black crowned night heron to me than a green heron. Thank heaven for pics. Trying to ID birds with just a verbal description isn't easy. That's why I like plants. They stay put while you figure them out or take pics of them!

    An embarassing problem

I'n not sure why I didn't think of this sooner, but I've had the same problem a few times in the past. One of the benefits of having had children (OK, technically, my wife "had" them, but I had a part in it:)) is the various baby products in the house that you would otherwise not have had...

    Suggested day hike?

There's an 8 1/2 mile marked loop at Wells Mills, if you want to end up where you started. A few rolling hills that you only get in a few other spots in the pines.

    What constitutes the Pine Barrens?

Since we are talking about the work of NJ pine barrens colliers, they would be pits in name only, more accurately being desrcibed as mounds. After the charcoal is scooped up, I'd guess only a minor depression would be left if any.

    What constitutes the Pine Barrens?

Those are landing sites for alien spacecraft. They could be charcoal pits too, but I like the landing sites idea better.

    An embarassing problem

I think I have the answer to your problem. There is an outdoor club I have encountered through the park (and by no other connection!) called the Paddling Bares. No, I didn't mean to type Bears. It is spelled BARES. I wish I was making this up, but I'm not. No more damp clothing!

    ticks

I know a few members of this forum had trouble finding Permanone, or maybe don't often get to walmart (which I avoid like the plague!). A sales flyer I just got in the mail today reminded me of where we buy such things at our office. For those of you who like to do your shoppping at your...

    ticks

I've gotten a few on me lately when all I've done is walk from the parking lot to my office. I could be picking them up by straying off the walkway a bit as my attention wanders or perhaps folks are bringing them in from the field and they are wandering around the building. In any case, it is a...

    Easy Tick Removal

They tried to establish a flock where I work years ago to control ticks. I was never sold on the idea, not having seen any solid science that indicated that they focus their feeding more on ticks than any other arthropod (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that). Also, in nature, predators...

    Post Fire Growth

While driving to work along Route 72 this morning, a Turkeybeard in bloom about 50 feet off the road in the burned area caught my eye. Looks like it's about time for the next round of fire-related pictures!

    Easy Tick Removal

I can't agree with Sue's post more. The Lyme-causing bacteria that might be in the tick is your biggest problem, not the tick itself. You need to use the safest way to remove it, not the easiest. Some of the removal methods passed about might have been fine in the days before Lyme disease, when...
