    Hiking Trip Out Of State

If you want some great hikes all over northern NJ, go to the New Your - New Jersey Trail Conference's website. Click on the link for "Hike of the Week". The hikes are grouped by the park or tract that they are within. They also publish maps including most of these trails, which you can buy...

OC Parks "Ghost Town" Tour - Jan '08

That tour will indeed be going to the Brooksbrae site. The trip descriptions have been recycled over and over for years, going back the day when Beck was a major source of info for many amateur historians. That particular trip despription certainly should be corrected. In any case, any of the...

    Hawkins to Bodine Questions

I'm used to suggesting the Evans to Beaver Br. trip since we do that stretch with school groups often and they can do it and still get back in time for the school buses to do their thing ( I cancelled such a trip today due to the deluge), but you are right, it is a very short trip. When we take...

    Hawkins to Bodine Questions

Two of my co workers paddled down from Hawkins today. They had to drag across several sections. Micks was putting people in at Godfreys Bridge for that reason. I'm pretty sure the state frowns of using Godfrey's as a put in or take out though. Evans Br. to Beaver Branch would be a better bet...

    Cloverdale Cranberry Farm

The county does not have plans for any major development there. Just a few dirt parking spaces and some picnic groves, left as natural as possible. The older building will have some office space and a room or two of historic displays for the public and the newer home will most likely be used for...

    Delaware Water Gap

Great pics. They bring back nice memories. I grew up in northern NJ and don't miss much of it aside from this area. I used to canoe camp on the Delaware every fall with buddies of mine until family obligations started to take their toll. I also spent lots of time fly fishing the area's streams...

I should have sprayed my bag with permethrin!

I've always found it weird that I've never gotten a case of what I was sure were chigger bites. Either I've been extremely lucky, as I'm the worst in the world at avoiding bad areas and taking precautions, or I have a tolerance to their symptoms that caused me to not realize I had been bitten by...

White horse and Black horse pike

However their names came about, I still have this mental block whenever I have to tell one from another, due to the two names being so similar!

    Duration on Mullica River CANOE

The last time I paddled that trip was years ago, but I seem to remember it taking me at least 6 hours. You did mean the Mullica, not the Batsto river, right? The Mullica doesn't flow into Batsto Lake, but the takeout on 542 is within walking distance of it.

    Pine Snake Monitoring

Thay can't exactly do whatever they want..........sort of. Development on endangered and threatened species habitat can be regulated, but the regulations are spotty and inconsistent, depending on where in the state the development is taking place. The freshwater wetland laws can come into play...

    Question about Direction of Waterflow

I used to curse the tide or winds back when I paddled the marsh or tidal waters in my canoe, but I haven't found them as much of a problem since I bought my kayak. Unless you have one of the shorter river-type boats, most kayaks buck the wind and tide fairly well. I've even paddled long...

    Pine Snake Monitoring

This relocating nonsense was a terrible precedent to allow. Most on this forum have some degree of understanding of wildlife ecology, but the general public does not and will think this is an acceptable solution elsewhere. The reason most T&E animals have had population declines in the first...

    Lower Bank, Green Bank

It wasn't long ago when that gravesite was surrounded by asphalt and protected by a chain link fence. I wish I took a photo back then. I'm glad that the graves are now treated with a bit more dignity but there was something a bit more mysterious about them when the site had a more "forgotten" look.

    Do deer ticks "nest"

Once in a while I end up in tick habitat unexpectantly, without having had chance to spray down first. For those occasions I try to keep some rolls of 2 or 3 inch wide masking tape in my office or truck. I wrap it around my palm and fingers a few times, sticky side out, and pat down the parts...

Does the recreation here die down in the summer.

My enthusiasm for the woods is still up there this time of year, but I also love the bay and it often presents a more pleasant option on any given day. I just trade the ticks for greenhead flies .

    Pinehurst or Pinewald?

You can also explore the site of the Pinewald station of the CNJ. The site is mostly overgrown, with just sume rubble and a bit of the foundation remaining from the station. It is interesting that the flagpole still stands at the site, poking up between some Norway Spruces, and still topped with...

    Sandy Ridge Wading Harrisville

I've been looking close at those pics, hoping to catch my cell phone in one of them. I was at many of those same locations on Wednesday and it fell off my belt someplace along the way. Oh well, easy come, easy go!

    For the hunters

The bucks are indeed in velvet now, and an 8 pointer would most likely be considered a nice buck. But several factors beyond the mere number of points go into judging a rack, such as the symmetry of the individual antlers and their points, and the overall size. As for me, I'm not a trophy hunter...

    About Spam Posts

The thing that confounds me is that there must be enough nitwits out there who respond to spammers soliciting on messageboards unrelated to what they are selling to make it worthwhile for them do keep doing it.
