Poor Peggy Clevenger: Murder or Just an Accident?

I've been coming what's available to me online for corroboration of Beck's account and have, thus far, turned up nothing. I am surprised, because the scene that Beck describes would be the exact kind of gory sensationalism that would have been noted in a 19th century newspaper. It would not...

Poor Peggy Clevenger: Murder or Just an Accident?

Well, according to Beck's visit as well as the cellar holes in the area, the "town" was fairly substantial so far as Pine Barrens settlements went. But yes, largely these "forgotten towns" are really quite small and a "town" only in name.

Poor Peggy Clevenger: Murder or Just an Accident?

Buckingham was a platform station along the Philadelphia and Long Branch RR. http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.93419029723112&lng=-74.44713592529297&z=14&type=hist&gpx= I believe the primary purpose of the station was for freight, specifically from the sawmill at Buckingham, but it's...

Poor Peggy Clevenger: Murder or Just an Accident?

I've been poking around some of the historic newspapers I have access to online, and I came across a mention of Peggy in the June 29, 1902 Detroit Free Press, in an article about snake hunting in the Pines, on page D5 entitled "Snake Hunting in the Black Forests of New Jersey." Here the...

A Hat, a hut, or a tavern: The Tale of Ong’s Hat.

I didn't know that you lived near Burrs Mills. That's one spot that I'd been meaning to do some research on. The whole Ong's Hat "area" (Mary Ann Forge, the canal nearby, Lower/Upper Mill) are some of my favorite places to explore.

A Hat, a hut, or a tavern: The Tale of Ong’s Hat.

An update to the article will be forthcoming which will have full citations for my sources. I'm just waiting on some info from Jerseyman on a book that I consulted that I no longer have access to.

Poor Peggy Clevenger: Murder or Just an Accident?

Judging by what we know about life in a furnace town (e.g.: the Martha Furnace diaries) we know that alcohol (ab)use was pretty rampant in the furnace towns, but by the mid 19th century the temperance movement was gaining steam and it might have been advantageous for Joseph Cox to actively seek...

Poor Peggy Clevenger: Murder or Just an Accident?

It's interesting to see that colliers had to travel really far to get charcoal for Hanover Furnace at the time.

A Hat, a hut, or a tavern: The Tale of Ong’s Hat.

Actually, I don't really have much information on the cafe. Now that you mention it, I think I remember the name changing as well. I wish I had more information on the old Ong's Hat Diner that was there prior to Apanay's.

    Redesigned Home Page

I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro. It's something with the forum software, I think. If you minimize the window and then bring it back OR scroll up or down it should come back.

    Kindle users?

I have the Kindle Keyboard version. It's great for reading books, which is what I use it solely for. I find that it's much easier on my eyes, and really convenient to carry around. I bought a plain old Kindle (non touch, without the keyboard) for my mom and she LOVES it. There's plenty of...

A Hat, a hut, or a tavern: The Tale of Ong’s Hat.

To be honest, I was conflicted about even including the last part, but I figure that it's a legend that's been around now for the better part of twenty years and, in some ways, has co-opted the history of the town itself, so it was worth including. Ted, as far as citations go, if you'll look...

    Redesigned Home Page

Hey everyone - I've just launched a slightly redesigned home page for the site. http://www.njpinebarrens.com I'm playing with some caching technology with the site, so let me know if you have any problems or things look weird. I'm hoping to make it run pretty fast. Any suggestions or...

Look! Up in the sky! Its a bird....

It's the year 2022 - and trucks look just the same as they did in 1973, and people still wear avocado green.
