Map of Whiting and Fort Dix

Thanks Boyd, I enjoyed the entire article. It must have been a sight to see 16,000 soldiers invading Penn and Bass. The locals must have been worried witnessing the "invasion" first thing in the morning. Teegate, thanks for the explanation. What you provided pieced together the the questions I...

Map of Whiting and Fort Dix

Boyd , do you remember where you read that story? The aerial photograph shows in detail many of the features of the base. I can clearly see a long line of vehicles parked side by side. Also all of the observation towers are visible and clearly marked. The large area of parked vehicles is...

Map of Whiting and Fort Dix

I am sure that is a possibility, but it may have to do with what is revealed about the military base. Honestly I don't know, but it makes for a interesting discussion.

Map of Whiting and Fort Dix

Boyd and Teegate, that dash dot line is the boundary for the state forest - Lebanon at the time that map was printed. I just took note that farther north the boundary of the military reservation carries over RT70. I noticed there are three gun club locations on this map too, but their names are...

Map of Whiting and Fort Dix

Boyd, the most cherished of items I have are several battered and torn maps used while he was in combat. My grandfather fought with the Fourth Infantry through D-day, the Battle of the Bulge and stayed afterwards during the occupation. There are also many maps of France, Belgium and Germany...

Map of Whiting and Fort Dix

While cleaning the basement this morning, I came across several old boxes that belonged to my grandfather. Hidden inside among family photos and medals earned during the Bulge, were several maps from 1947. I don't know how these maps came to be in my grandfathers possession, but he did return...

    Fire breaks

Thanks I edited my two threads. Sometimes the error comes from me rushing to type my thoughts and from auto-correct, but for the most part is happens because I am not that petty of a person. I usually catch my misspelled words and correct them when I reread my threads. Vollie, I have a few...

    Fire breaks

Your welcome! If I can whine and moan about petty things at a party, I might as well take the time to pen a letter about how I view the FFS and its impact on the land we all enjoy very much. It has to start some time, might as well be now.

    Fire breaks

Teegate, like Bobpbx said, write a letter! I am! Some points I am bringing up are: 1) impact on endangered species, 2) impact on habitat, 3) waste of manpower/ poor execution, and 4) the need for a biologist to be on sight to supervise sensitive areas. I am well aware that prescribed burns and...

    who knew?

Stiz, there may be enough information for you to find what you need in this link to the Library of Congress. More than likely someone at Camden? county records could help you. http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/nj0524/

    Tuckahoe WMA

This section here looks very much like the magazines at Tuckahoe. http://boydsmaps.com/#lidar,39.607131,-74.701345,16 LIDAR is,hands down, the greatest tool I have been using lately. The ability to "see" through the tree canopy is amazing. It has helped me locate a group of cellar holes and...

    Fire breaks

Is it necessary to write a scolding letter to the Forest Fire Service and DEP?

    Fire breaks

That makes sense. If you pan the map towards the north more there are even more stylized cuts in the forest around the base .

    Fire breaks

Thanks. I haven't seen a crazier area of cuts than by Lakehurst. I don't know why it was necessary make cuts like this. http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=40.00916006266394&lng=-74.39883470535278&z=16&type=nj1995&gpx=

    Fire breaks

"E", is the FFS going over established breaks or cutting new ones? I have seen new paths marked with day-glow pink tape that haven't been cut yet.

    Plan Review Public Outreach

It seems that everyone commenting is upset with one point or another that is being addressed by the CMP. Are smoke and mirrors being used?

Millville as it used to be

The Library of Congress is a terrific site. Unfortunately many items have yet to be digitized and are only able to be viewed in person. I hope that the staff will spend more time scanning historic maps, adding them to the online catalog. The overall collection within the library is massive.

Big Chrome and Plenty of Rust

Thanks! The Greenwood area was coated with about an inch, while the grassy areas around my neighborhood had a light coating. Route 539 had several accidents that shut down the highway south of Webbs Mill. I actually back tracked and took the ROW across Greenwood to get past traffic that stopped...

    Insect nest?

It is probably a cocoon from one of the larger moths with eye spots. I noticed butterfly cocoons tend to hang from a "pod" with a single attachment point while big moths wrap themselves and "lean" against a branch. Ecampbell, you can always put the cocoon in a mason jar and see what comes out...
