    It Could have been Worse

It is amazing how fast you can get yourself in trouble. I was taking a short hike along the Oswego to scout an area I wanted to see. It sounds simple enough. A short two mile hike along the river bank, explore a few hidden bogs along the way and then hike a sand road back. What could go wrong? A...

    Dble Trouble SP cranberry harvest

I saw today the harvest has started along Route 563 just outside of Chatsworth. The workers had the walk behind machines flailing in the water and the sides of the highway where speckled red from the cranberries falling off the trucks. I am not sure if it was Lee's or Haine's berries being...

West Branch of the Wading River

I hiked east of 563 this morning and you are correct about being the area being intense. I had to push through a dense wall of briers and brush much taller than me for awhile. It was fun even though I got scratched up and soaked. I haven't seen that many Wood ducks in a small area before. The...

    This Old Stone House

46er you are right about the bridge. It isn't a rail bridge even though I always thought it was. It was built in 1855 and destroyed in 1955 by Hurricane Diane. The bridge replaced an earlier ferry system.

    This Old Stone House

These two photos show an architectural detail along the front edge of the roofline that might help with guessing the age of the building. The front is several feet higher than where the fascia would be on a modern house.

West Branch of the Wading River

SB, I was looking over the aerials for a hike tomorrow or Sunday and came across something photographed that I was going to include as one of my waypoints. Is the marker in the map the location of your fourth picture...

Tribute to a Foxhunter: Pomeroy Crossroads

Joc, every time I have seen the hounds, it was along E. Branch Road. The area hunted was between the Hunter Education Center and Stone Tavern Lake.

Tribute to a Foxhunter: Pomeroy Crossroads

I have seen riders on horseback chasing forty hounds on the scent of a fox on the grounds of Assunpink WMA. Horses and noisy hounds are exciting to see in action, working hard at the chase.

    Lower Forge camping

Adam, Karl raised a good point. Are trying to research a specific area? Maybe we could help you find a camp location that is easier for you to reach and set up?

    This Old Stone House

46er, the bridge north of the house was a railroad bridge. The abutments are still visible. It was speculation on my part as to what the structure may be. If you take a look at Reading Howell's 1785 map and William Watson's 1812 map of New Jersey you will see several names very close to where...

    This Old Stone House

I wonder if it could be a ferry station. The building is very close to a river, in fact only a few yards away. The area had countless ferry operations on both sides of the waterway.

    This Old Stone House

I am labeling and organizing the thousands of pictures that I have and came across a series I took of an old house several Winters ago. Without getting to specific of the location, the stone structure is along a river bank in northern New Jersey. I have no idea how it has survived many of the...

    batona trail hike

Don't forget that there is an antique railroad crossing sign, an old dam, and some railroad station artifacts nearby too. The station can also be found if you look hard enough.

    Lower Forge camping

I could walk up the street from my grandparents house Sunday and pick you up some kielbasa. You want Krajana or Czosnkowa? Fresh Rye Bread too? Most of the small stores have closed but the farmer's market is still the best place to go.

    Cedar Water & Homebrew

Have you tried toasting the cedar? You might have to approach it as an herb or spice where toasting one or the other releases the components in the oils. The toasting could be light or heavy and keep in mind this will change the flavor too. Rosemary or juniper berries are also in the same earthy...

    Cedar Water & Homebrew

Slightly off subject and I am rambling. There are a few companies aging beer on cedar but I think most use Spanish cedar which is in the mahogany family. Cigar City is one that does this in its Humidor series. I haven't looked to see if any use white or red cedar. I don't think it would taste...

    Dave Amato: A Vanished Breed

Thanks, it was a very nice area to hike early in the morning. The perfect weather only added to it. Imagine walking out the door first thing in the morning with the sweet air and surrounded by cranberry bogs. Not a bad thought at all.

    Cedar Water & Homebrew

Pinelandpaddler, I wonder if it was a play on words. The kegs may have been made of cedar or toasted cedar added for a hint of flavor.
