    What is this building?

Oriental, thanks for filling in some of the blanks! I noticed while in the area that many of the blueberry plants are growing out through the charred old growth that still exists in many of the rows. Next year might be a good time to pick some blueberries.

    Lower Forge camping

Has anyone ever tried the civilian MREs? I recently saw Wornick Eversafe MREs on the shelf at the local outdoor store and I was curious if they are worth the price. A case of twelve meals was seventy-nine dollars. MREs could be a great option for camping if the quality is there.

    Dave Amato: A Vanished Breed

Adding a touch more life to an old thread. Dave Amato's homestead early this morning as the sun came up over the trees with a hint of fall in the colors. It is a marvelous spot to call home.

    Lower Forge camping

Adam, it has been awhile since I camped there but it is about a half mile walk from Quakerbridge Rd. I don't think it is possible to get the campground from Stokes Road or across "un-bridge" without getting wet. It is a primitive camp site with one privy and no water. You have to pack water in...

    Here comes the hot weather

It is just an observation, but the amount of water today varied from place to place. The route I took while out was a huge loop. The Great Swamp was damp. Carranza/Friendship was more towards dry than anything else. While Penn/Oswego had standing water that appeared fairly deep in areas. The...

    Living with the Snakes

I was eye to eye with a Black Racer today. I was along the side of a road in a wet area and the snake lifted its head above the grass when it became alert to my presence. I stayed motionless and after about two minutes it moved on. I would say it was around four feet in length. Just visible in...

    Rarities

Oji, I found Symphyotrichum concolor besides the gun club Tresses. The stem covered with appressed leaves is how I identified the single specimen. The flowers where white and wilted. BTW - It was impressive to see so many orchids in one area.

McRib to be brought back in December

McRib or any fast food isn't my thing. I almost never eat it. I will stop and get a hot or cold sandwich before I eat at any of the big names. I can get a huge smoked turkey club for the price of a value meal. But that is just me, my body, my temple. My only weakness when it comes to a greasy...

My first Orchid of the season

I waited two weeks for the Spiranthes cernua that I found to bloom, only to find out that deer consumed almost all of them. I only found three left this evening. These orchids are more robust than the other Tresses I have seen. Spiranthes cernua (Nodding Ladies Tresses) A very large...

    Could Use Some Help

During the the 1930s, many WPA and CWA projects took place around Bowman's Hill including the building of cabins, grounds work and plantings. I know for sure a cabin by the visitor's center was one of the buildings constructed. The chimney and three stall privy look similar in style to the stone...

    Could Use Some Help

Teegate, do you spray it on before hand as a deterrent or afterwards as an insecticide? I have used it by spraying it on before hand and it didn't work to well for me. It also has an odd sweet scent that I don't like.

    Could Use Some Help

I am going to have some difficulty with step "3". :D 3. Choose the area where licking cannot occur e.g. on the back of the neck. Part the coat so the contents can be applied directly to the skin when the pipette is squeezed.

    Could Use Some Help

I have a nice collection of chigger bites. I have some around both my ankles, my belt line, along my left arm, and a few on my stomach. Some are new and others are fading marks. I am lucky that my body doesn't have a bad reaction to them. I get a small red bump and not much more. Chiggers are...

    Tornado Watch Issued 9-18-12

The earlier part of storm puttered out after twenty minutes of heavy rain and wind. Now outside there is a light drizzle and the air is still. I just saw that the storm band is east along the coast with the heaviest rain to the north by NYC. More than likely, the rain will be off and on during...

    The Mahacomack Line

I'll keep that in mind. The stone in the picture is some distance away from the water. I thought it might have been a marker for the village and resort that surrounded the lake.

    Tornado Watch Issued 9-18-12

The rain has started forty minutes north of the barrens. Outside at the moment, it is almost hurricane like. Tonight isn't going to be nice if this is the start of the storm. It is terrible and alarming.
