    Lock's Bridge

Thanks Pinelandpaddler. I noticed from several threads on the forum that members here have pointed out Arthur Pierce has come to erroneous conclusions more than once. The combined knowledge on the forum is more advanced than what he had available to him. I am looking forward to what you discover...

    Lock's Bridge

Is there any proof that the "mystery forges" where connected to Atsion? If so, what would be the benefits of the association? The quote is from Ecampbell and his thread the Lower Forge. http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/lower-forge-unbridge-revisited.5759/

    The Mahacomack Line

I have come across several stones while hiking Colliers Mills. I didn't save to many of their positions because at the time I wasn't interested in stone markers. Most where by lakes and empty bogs. I found this one today. I am surprised by its location. The marker was close by a wet area where I...

Big Chrome and Plenty of Rust

I quickly averaged several prices from 1956 for gas. It is close to twenty cents or so per a gallon. Factor in inflation and today that would be approximately two dollars and change. Fuel today is double that price for premium.

Big Chrome and Plenty of Rust

The fat fenders and curves of the old pickups are gorgeous! Look at the lines on both of those trucks! A low drag coefficient and a small drag area was not even in the minds of the designers of the two of those vehicles. A computer model will never generate an image like either of those trucks.

Big Chrome and Plenty of Rust

I plan on going back and taking more pictures during the Winter. The doors and other parts are on the ground, all covered by low growth. I just realized that I don't have any photographs of the fins. If you look close at the stainless windshield trim, it is blue along the bottom. This car was...

    batona trail hike

The Preserve is one of my go to places. There is always something interesting to find on the property from flora to fauna. As of yesterday, these freckled rarities are in full bloom on the property. The endangered flower is a Pine Barrens Gentian (Gentiana autumnalis). However, I believe...

    What is this building?

The club is still active and there are current no trespassing signs posted on the perimeter of the property. I walked the outside of the barbed wire fence and used a telephoto lens for the picture of the coordinates.

    batona trail hike

Last summer I was walking across the Plains one moon lit night with my headlamp in my pack. I stepped in a hole and hit my head so hard on a Pygmy pine I thought I heard the echo from the crack of my skull return from Stafford Forge. Afterwards, I couldn't wear the headlamp because my head hurt...

    batona trail hike

I once saw a small child in a backpack. The pack was well thought out. The little one had a fold up canopy for shade , a drink in a bottle on a lanyard and all the supplies needed in the side pockets. I thought it was great.

My first Orchid of the season

Oji, how many more orchids do you have left before the season is over? Two more - Spiranthes and Corallorhiza?

Big Chrome and Plenty of Rust

While on my search for Pine Barren Gentians, I found this fifties' gem rusting away. A four door beast of a car with fins and huge pointed bumpers. Some black paint was still visible on the quarter panels and a few pieces of white vinyl could be found. I stood in front of the shell of a car and...

Quaking Bog of a Thousand Asphodel

Thanks Dogg. Teegate, the Asphodel won't appear rare to the more adventurous who get out to their locations that are secluded or almost impossible to reach. They are familiar because their boggy habitat is visited more often, but they still are rare.

Quaking Bog of a Thousand Asphodel

After spending the morning by the Lower Forge and then an hour or so with the DEP, I decided to trek farther east than I normally do. Bass River was the location. I cut down a dim road with a fading image in mind from a late night glance of an aerial from Ben's maps. A short hike through a...

    Invasive Species Strike Team

Over the past winter I took an invasive species class to earn credits to keep my DEP license current and was surprised to learn that earthworms are a large problem in the Northeast. The short story is European earthworms, such as L. terrestris or L. rebellus and Asian earthworms, such as...

    Invasive Species Strike Team

GermanG, is there any chance that the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris will impact any of the rich soil corridors in Pine Barrens, like it has in New York state? Are there any indications that damage from escaped or released worms is already occurring?

    What is this building?

Thanks Teegate, but it is still early and there is much more area I need to cover. I think I will be able to find them. I really enjoy this area. The forest floor is open with only scrub brush along the floor. The canopy shades the area nicely too.
