Big sink hole at Hampton Furnace

Driving up 206 past Atsion yesterday I noticed the road to Hampton Furnace was taped off. This morning I drove in from Carranza Rd and found the road to 206 taped off just as you leave Hampton furnace. There's a dirt covered culvert that drains water into the Mullica just east of the Railroad...

    The Stone Hills

I walked that road from Carranza rd to Hampton Furnace. On an old map it shows it as a road on the west side of the Batsto but it is only recognisable as a road for about 1.25 miles. Shortly past the submerged bridge it turns into a foot path.

    The Stone Hills

They did a controlled burn on the east side of Hampton Gate, it might be a good time to explore. It did not burn the briars near the river.

    New Map

It appears the proposed route of the Delaware & Raritan RR is significantly north of where it was actually built, North of Apple Pie Hill and running through Hampton Furnace. BTW the MrSid viewer is really nice. Does anyone know when the RR was built? Ed

Beavers return to New York City after 200 years

Biologists videotaped a beaver swimming up the Bronx River on Wednesday. Its twig-and-mud lodge had been spotted earlier on the river bank, but the tape confirmed the presence of the animal itself. West Jersey History and Map Links

Why was New Jersey divided into east and west? It's not even east/west when I look at the map. It doesn't seem geographical, pines are included with mountains in the west, and both share the Jersey shore.

    Mannis Duck Pond

Thats a really great spot! When we first "discovered it" in the late 70's we were hiking from Carranza to Lower Forge. We found an inviting foot path and stumbled onto the pond. At that time there had been a fire north of the pond and it was very open. Great for birding. We since mannaged to get...

Crowded enough that we had to park off site. The tickets have a half hour window for the entry time so there isn't crowding in the exhibit. There was no line to enter the exhibit itself. If you go, purchase the audio tour. For $7 you get some gadget with headphones. Highlighted exhibits have a...

We went to see it at the Franklin Institute yesterday. It was impressive but I was disapointed that the full size funeral mask was not present. It's the mask you see in the advertisements. I stood in front of that mask when it was at the Smithsonian in the 70's. It made me feel like I was in the...
