    Pine Barren Flora

Al, I agree for the most part. But yesterday I was hitting unseen roots under the water. That is almost like bumping into something in the dark.

    Pine Barren Flora

Joe, I also saw out of the corner of my eye as I was leaving, a rim with no tire on it. It looks pretty cool. If I go back I'll snap a photo of it.

Thanks Joe. The rim and tire are in Double-trouble State Park. An old home site I think, from around the 40's. A defunct baby carriage:

    Pine Barren Flora

Thank you! I see those matchsticks every year around this time. A refreshingly colorful sight in a damp swamp filled with green foliage and amber water. I see on Wiki that they call them "bog beacons" elsewhere. A good name.

    Pine Barren Flora

Some of the cedar swamps are inundated with water. Combine all the rains with those river rats (beaver), and it makes for tough going. Forget everything your body taught you about exploring a cedar swamp in drier conditions. When the swamps are flooded nothing you step on is stable, not even the...

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

Here is some good info on the lone-star tick in NJ. http://twp.freehold.nj.us/ticks/public/types_of_ticks_nj/lone_star.html

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

This is a really good article on the meat allergy disease the lone star ticks can give us. I do have a problem sometimes late at night, mostly after I'm in bed, when I get a small area on my lower leg that itches badly. I hope it's not this...

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

This male lone-star latched on to my pants today. The view on the left is without alcohol, the one on the right is after alcohol. Note how the alcohol makes the colors pop. This fellow survived 20 minutes in a 50-50 alcohol/water solution, so I just put him in a freezer. Note, the bottom photo...

    Crossley Preserve Cleanup Project--Volunteers Needed

This is a worthy cause if you can help. Make sure you email Bob Zappalorti if you are coming. PS: Please set aside any comments about the Wharton Map regarding this one. It is important that people come together for this cause without rancor. Volunteers Needed for a One Day Crossley Snake...

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

8 days in a sealed bag? No problem. This female lone star is still lively. I just covered her in a water alcohol mixture. That ought to settle her down. It works for some of us!

    Mullica Bridge On Jackson Road

I like Iowa. I was there in the mid-80's going to a school. Went out in some of that country where all you could hear was an occasional cow lowing, maybe a chicken or two, and perhaps the creaking of a someone opening a screen door at a farmhouse. Very peaceful.

    Pine Barren Flora

Helonias is like a bottle rocket. The inflorescence is very brief and bright, but quick to fade. It's always disappointing to miss the big show.

Unusual Memorial to a Young Man in the Pines

Thank you Lael. Jimmy had a wonderful, vibrant personality. He had that spark, that unusual brightness that many people never attain. I'm glad I got to know him, if only for a short time.

    Tick removal

That used to work great for me for pine flies, but all of a sudden early last season I started getting welts on my skin from it. I must have developed and allergy to it.

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

In an effort to be more aware of tick Identification, I started pulling them off my clothes and bagging them for photo study. Let me know if I've misidentified any of these. Numbers 4 and 5 bit me before I started using permethrin for the season. I pulled them out cleanly, and tried my luck at...

    Pine Barren Flora

That is a monument Al. See below; it marks a part of the Franklin Parker Preserve. And no, that stream is the north branch of the forked river where it goes under power lines.
