    Tuesday with Alfie

Al and Guy and Jeff, we walked right by that on the Warren Grove Burn PBX hike. We could not have been 10-15 yards away and did not see it. Al, one of my favorite spots is at the southern end of that spung. There are some large trees (large for the plains) and I think I remember remarking how...

    happy '10

Same to you cranbrake. And I wish everyone who posts and lurks on here happiness, health, and freedom from anxiety in the coming year. I look foward to a good exploring year, seeing new territory. And I seriously hope for a flavorful, tender steak in the coming year, becuase the stuff in the...

Hmmm. That is quite interesting. Are the ends curved? That's what I see. That conjures up all kinds of ideas in my head; none plausible. Sled-hauling wood or moss. An early aircraft with ski's.

Is that an interesting perspective or what? Your eye wanders from one side to the other, and never really settles in, but enjoys the variation. And look at the two small, thin trees coming in at the top...like they are sneaking in, feeling their way...they want to get in the picture, into the...

Bill, I came across your "Skit on Ice" on the random image on the front page. Your work deserves to be in an art museum. I'm very serious about that. You should find a proper venue. Your work deserves (no, it screams for) an additional outlet that will get you proper exposure. Just don't ever...

Guy, come this April to the toughest part of all. I'm going downstream from Lacey Road on the east side of the creek, counting that side. Then I'm going to cross the creek somehow to a very rugged Island where there are some. The Forked River Mountain coalition owns a portion of the Island, so I...

A Trip Through the Pines, 1859

Hmmmm....."For miles in all directions the woodsman’s axe had been busy, for scarcely a tree could be seen—all the wood had been turned into charcoal by the industrious colliers." They may have been going through the Greenwood tract at the time. Although it was earlier (1829), there was over...

Thanks Glo. In regards to the yellowish floating stuff....that does not exist on the Cook's Branch (or is rarely seen). The yellow you see is actually the pebbley bottom, and the bright white patches are dappled sunlight. Photo's do not do this stream justice at all.

A Botany Excursion to Brown’s Mills in 1890

Guy and Ben: this is just a suggestion.....this is a very rare and wonderful thing that is happening here....this assembly of Pine Barren stories from yesteryear by Jerseyman. You'll likely never get anybody to ever do anything similar considering his vast library and knowledge. It would be very...

A Botany Excursion to Brown’s Mills in 1890

Thanks Jerseyman. It is interesting to note that in that period grass pink was called Calopogon pulchettus, but just 20 years later Stone listed it as Limodorum tuberosum, and now it is Calopogon tuberosus (but check your spelling on that pulchettus, it is more likely pulchellus or pulchellum).

    Abandoned guinea pig at Carranza

If Ed had not picked him up, he would have been a good snack for a coyote. I'm sorry Gipsie, I could not resist that.

    Flower ID

Since Mark has apparently eaten it (with a dollop of sour cream---yech!), I'd go with his ID Tom. It also has Lyre shaped leaves. Here is a photo of a couple I collected at Lakehurst.

    Flower ID

I dare not made a determination based on just that much, but it certainly does look like the beginnings of a Cinquefoil species.

That is lyrate shaped Tom, and that is most likely a species of the Genus Centaurea, most likely Centaurea nigrescens.....knapweed.
