History of Enduro racing in the Pines.

When I went to high school in Pemberton (68-72), we often went out to Chatsworth area and watched them go through boggy spots. I remember the names sandy lane and curly fern enduro, though they could have run any time in the early 70's too. There would be a general consensus on which areas would...

    Barrens of fire

The Canadians always have that great wilderness at their back door. They don't often visit it, but they like it there just the same. Most people who want to drill in the artic Wildlife refuge could not care any less about the wilderness that is there. Most people who do not want to drill there...

    Swamp Pink

Pink are very picky about water and weather. Only 7-10% of the plants bloom each year. I see awful years and I see great years where the infloresences are on top of 40" tall stalks. They need water, and lots of it. It has to be a constant supply. I fought and cursed and bled my way to a spot on...

    Swamp Pink

I see it every year. I make it a rite of Spring. I am the counter for the Bamber Lake population for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is endangered. Bamber Lake is a super strong, super nice population with several locations. Guy and Jess helped me count a few years ago.

    Munion Field

Jerseyman, to add to the knowledge, from page 66 of The 1910 report of the NJ State Museum, Witmer Stone tells of an account of a wagon trip by one C. F. Saunders (Tuckerton to Atsion, 1899): "..(after leaving Tuckerton)...Mile after mile of oak and pine barrens were passed without sign of...

    Historic Photos of the Pines

Very cool Jerseyman. It is not inconceivable at all that those were members of a botanical or geological expedition. The pines in the late 17th century was prime time for exploration of the flora and geography. The plains were considered a wonder and the barrens as a whole also, as they exhibit...

Calico ( Highway To Hell )

I too find it real, real difficult to stay inside in the spring and summer. If its light out, I want to be there. In fact, it is an obsession I have. You only live once, and the real world is where its happening. I find it real strange to stay inside and watch tv when the sun is shining, even in...

Calico ( Highway To Hell )

James, if you are truly serious about exploring in the summer (most of us are not, though I do go out alone on many short excursions) you should at least get rubber boots. As your friend found out, you need to really know the lay of the land as the pines are brutal in the summer. Its bad enough...

The Great Egg Harbor River with the Pinelands Commission

Donna McBride and Branwen. Good people, very energetic in their efforts to preserve the environment. I always wanted to do that river someday. I found a report on a canoe trip taken on that river about 100 years (+-) ago. Ben and I were working on publishing the report on the site. Its...

    Spiders

Mike, are you sure that is what they are? It is rare for them to be in this range. Did you make a positive ID? Here is a link. There are many links: http://dermatology.cdlib.org/DOJvol5num2/special/recluse.html

    Dark Green Header Bars

Ben, I find it difficult to read the date and time of individual posts due to the poor contrast between the shaded dark green color of the bar and the black font of the date. Is there anything that can be done about that?
