Batsto River East .. A PBX Hike

Guy, those are great photos, especially the shot of the creek from base level.

Actually, I was successful this year in getting the state to knock down the dam and start beaver removal operations. I've been working with F&W management out of Robbinsville. There was a misunderstanding about what the water level should be.

    Oswego Watershed

Very true, unfortunately. The below two photos were taken on June 1st, 9 days ago at Webb's Mill. The second photo is 100 yards downstream from the boardwalk. Hundreds of dead cedars and a virtual wasteland.

    Water Lilies in Bloom?

Although slightly possible, this is the very earliest they would ever be out. I'd wait till last week in June, or early to mid July is even better. They may have seen the bud preceding the spatterdock (Nuphar variegata) flower, a different species, which I photographed on Monday:

    Fly advice from PBXer's!

Dumb question; but you do wear a hat, right? I have a broad palm hat, and give it a good spray.

With that said, if you get into an area where they breed, even while using the above, they'll pester you without mercy.

    Fly advice from PBXer's!

I do use this. It is much more effective than deet for pine flies. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0032NK1II/ref=sr_ph_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1465398191&sr=1&keywords=skin+so+soft+expedition

    Upper Wading River

Regarding the Risley, I walked it in April in the below area. It is very primitive back there. Quite a unique setting. The trees seem ancient, the water dark, deep and foreboding, and the entire area dark and quiet. I was hoping to interest my PBX brothers to do a fall exploration there.

    Upper Wading River

Well, when you think of the 12 dams and that I'm 62 now, it don't seem too bad. Throw in the lunch and the 45 minutes I was looking for orchids in the woods, not too bad at all.

    Upper Wading River

Only sporadically until you get to the reservoir. The hindrance further upstream is the beaver--their dams create extensive wetlands on both sides of the river making it difficult to walk unless you have boots. I did have mine.

    Upper Wading River

From the bridge on route 563, I brutally made my way past the 6 or 7 beaver dams to the reservoir downstream. Once you get past the last dam, there is only one tough spot, and it's free and clear after that. Clearly, this run has to be worth it to those wanting to try it. It took 5 hours or so...

    Almost killed Bambi

?? That is strange. It looks like a black racer to me. Did it look kind of shiny, like a ribbon? Normally they won't stick around for that.

    Goshen Pond

I see Phragmites in the foreground in your second to last photo. Good thing you took the shot at this time, for that view is sure to disappear (and probably forever).

    Shoal Branch

    Sounds good Guy.

    Shoal Branch

About 600 feet if you come in from the east side. Note: there was one spot about halfway up that is a mass of trees across the creek. But, there is an opening on the left side that is really easy, it's just hard to see until you get close. I could have cut that 6oo feet in half, but I wanted to...

    Shoal Branch

Always wanted to try this branch, to see how far I could go. I was eventually blocked (and me without a saw), but I got far up this surprising stream. It is fairly wide and deep, and had been kept open in the past by someone. Very, very quiet back there, especially nice was the drift back...

    Where is this?

Regarding Webb's Mill boardwalk, I went out today to survey the damage done to the orchids. The dam still looks good, but there are only 15 Arethusa orchids this year. We normally get 10-15 times that amount. These were saved only because they are on the two higher hummocks. The back portion...
