Thanks so much for the pictures and description. I hope they have something available. I stayed at Timberline Lake a couple of years ago and the "cabin" turned out to be a glorified tool shed, so I was leery.

Anyone have pictures of the cabins on Pakim Pond? I might be staying there for a few days but cannot find one picture of the cabins on the net.

Yes, it is a Northern Redbelly Turtle. Turtles dig several "test" nests before choosing the perfect spot. Neat observations. I photographed a big female last summer in Burlington County.

Just a quick note to those interested. The "rough" part of the name refers to the scales of the snake, which are keeled instead of smooth. Nice stuff Bob. I'll be down in the Barrens July 3-4. Contact me if you want to do a little herping.

Eastern Tiger Salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) Somewhere in the Pine Barrens 08/28/07 ..in case any of you haven't seen them before.

I saw a pair on the Batona Trail on 06/07.

I am planning on camping in the Barrens this year. I would like to know some of the better sites to view wildlife, particularly reptiles and amphibians. I made two day trips last summer to Wharton and Carranza road and it was wonderful. Can't wait to come back!

A small black spider of the family Gnaphosidae, the "running spiders". Has not yet been identified at a specific level. I saw many of these. Elegant Crab Spider (Xysticus elegans) A very interesting crab spider that I saw on the edge of a trail.

This time the weather was on our side as we entered Carranza road and headed for a spot we had found last time. This time around I had my gear ready : We headed for the old train tracks around 11:30am after a quick brunch. The weather was warm, partly cloudy, and the insects were numerous...

I had no luck finding good artificial cover. There were some haystacks, a tire, and a couple of boards on the side of the road near a farm. Nothing outstanding though. If anyone has tips on some good AC in Wharton/carranza rd, please drop me an e-mail.

I suspect the rain brought them up from the ground. I'm not telling anyone to disturb habitat, but they can probably be found under rotting logs and flat stones. We found some really nice habitat, so i'm feeling good about our next trip in 2 weeks. Hopefully the weather will be good.

Anyone have an idea of which Milk Snake subspecies is present in the Pines? I've heard the Scarlet King (Lampropeltis triangulum elapsoides), and the Eastern Milk (Lampropeltis t. triangulum) can be found. I've also heard that the intergrade Eastern X Scarlet (Coastal Plains) can be found...

Absolutely nothing. But I know there are pricks out there that will harrass for no reason, other than to be a prick. I don't want my first trip to the Pines to be foul.
