    Meadow Companies

Awesome. My real name is Douglas, btw. Salt Hay was also harvested in the creeks and floodplain around Raritan Bay, I grew up near here. Either way, it's fascinating stuff. Many thanks for pointing me in these directions!

    Meadow Companies

Not exactly the Pine Barrens, but the Delaware river floodplain area in Gloucester County- Was doing some work with my "real" job the past few weeks and came across some mentions of meadow companies from the 1700s and 1800s, organized to maintain dikes and levees on the Delaware River. The...

    Batsto Forge

Bumping this. Took my daughter to visit Batsto today. Best part was she was taking pictures of the Mansion, grist mill, dam and sawmill. Much better than "ah, whatever, can we go home now?" Was the forge and furnace on the same plot of land as the village today? Definitely making a trip...

    Milestones

This is from the eastbound side of Old Marlton Pike heading towards downtown Medford, a few hundred yards past the entrance to Freedom Park. "C" Camden The other side's number is worn away, likely designated 7-8 mi to MH (Mount Holly) What is interesting is if you note, the two types of font...

Milestone in Haddonfield, corner of Haddon and Kkngs

Distance wise, 3mi to Camden and 5 mi to Gloucester, with the hands pointing in the right directions would be a point about in Westville today. I mentioned this in a discussion in one of the other forums. I initially thought Woodbury would work, based on age of the town, but that's too far...

Milestone in Haddonfield, corner of Haddon and Kkngs

There is a milestone in downtown Haddonfield you may be familiar with. It's in front of Happy Hippo if you're unfamiliar. Upon examining it, the hand points at Camden the correct way. The "Glou" side points north, up the Kings Highway, to a point roughly where Lenola Rd hits Kings Highway...

    Goshen in Camden or Burlington?

If it's any help, Atlantic County split off from Gloucester County in 1837

    Goshen in Camden or Burlington?

I'm late to this discussion however it's fascinating--and I've spent two hours poring over some of these maps! If it's any help- and kind of a question too- my understanding is the intersection of current Atsion Rd/Oakshade Rd and Jackson Rd was the location of the Sign of the...

    Milestones

If you go southwest on Mill St/Church Rd about 6 miles, this would drop you basically at the intersection of Hartford Rd and Rt 70. There's not a straight shot, I wonder if Wilkins Station went all the way through at one point. Maybe Hanover or Hainesport.

    Milestones

So as not to take the other thread about the stage between Philadelphia and Egg Harbor further afield; I'm in Vincentown right now as @Jerseyman suggested, to look for mile stones. Here's a stone close to the bridge/grist mill site. I'm curious what the "H" refers to. Haddonfield is 15 miles...

Travel along the old stage route from philly to egg harbor?

Just a note, and not to continue diverting from the Stage Route; I am hypothesizing that the mile stone in Haddonfield may have been moved. Is this possible? Not sure how deep these things are anchored. The one hand on the 'Camden" side of the marker points the right way, towards Camden...

Travel along the old stage route from philly to egg harbor?

Thank you. Whether it sunk or the land was built up around it, no idea. I would hazard a guess that the buried letters may refer to Camden, if you extend straight down Kresson Rd to Haddon Ave and continue on, 8 miles puts you in Camden. This text on the post appears similar to the post in...

Travel along the old stage route from philly to egg harbor?

Thank you, I visited Haddonfield yesterday. The stone at the corner of Haddon Av & Kings Highway is interesting. The distance to Camden, using Haddon Ave is correct. It appeared, though, the hand "pointing" to "Glou" which was/is I'm assuming referring to Gloucester, is incorrect. It's...

Travel along the old stage route from philly to egg harbor?

I may be up there today again, I'm going to look a little further west on Main St/Rt 537 around the intersection with 41/Kings Highway. Google Maps has what appears to be another marker in that vicinity, I can't make out any detail from the street view. It would make sense, though, the road...

Travel along the old stage route from philly to egg harbor?

I haven't participated here in a few years, but I thought of this site yesterday. Glad to see it's still here. I was in Moorestown yesterday, at the intersection of Mount Laurel Rd and Main St, at the intersection, there's a stone marker similar to the above. I'll attach a screenshot from...

    Delaware and Atlantic Canal

The only Rosenhayn I know of in New Jersey is located outside of Bridgeton. Which map? I'll have a look.

    Tuckerton Stage Road

I have a follow up question here, even though this is almost 9 years old :) So continuing east from Washington, the route followed what Google has labelled as Iron Pipe Rd through Maxwell over 563 and following the "Wading River-Maxwell Rd" to cross the Wading River in the vicinity of today's...

    First post- Thank you!!

Hello all- My real name is Doug; I found this website somehow and have been spending an inordinate amount of time on it exploring over the past month and a half. New Jersey history is my favorite subject. I live in Linwood, NJ, work in banking. I'm also a third generation Eagle Scout, so...
