"Enabler" is a whole other level that transcends simple posting. It's more of a lifestyle, rarely found outside of suffolk county and this forum. You've got to be devoted.

Gas prices are so high so let me spend $7k on a Geo instead

Unless their lease was up, or it was time to get a new car, that decision to throw down 7 grand doesn't make very good economic sense. Now, if it were time for a new car and she had 7 grand to spend, I'd say go for the cleaner option. That doesn't necessarily mean the most fuel efficient...

    McKenzie River trail 5-3-08

Yeah, the color was amazing. There's a sizeable industry for river guides there. It's a bit much for me, as I was steeped in lazy floating down the mullica or batsto, and don't know if I'd enjoy it as much. I think you need some sort of inflatable, most of the people use some sort of cataraft...

    Batona Trail hike

It definitely is a good form of excersize, and personal goal setting, discipline, etc... Kind of in the same class as people who try to set speed records for thru hiking the AT and PCT. When I hike I find myself naturally alternating between zoning out and walking faster, and taking it easy...

    Online Photos

My girlfriend is a med student at UW (washington) where PINE was developed. It still serves as the basis for their email, but it has a shiny new, but completely awkward, web interface called, strangely enough, WebPINE. She hates it. I like vi myself for editing. Although I must say I'm...

    McKenzie River trail 5-3-08

As some of you know I used to live in the pine barrens, (hence my interest in this forum), but now live in the pacific northwest. I guess this is the place I'll be posting the occasional pics from hikes out here, unless there's a better place for them, or people would rather just not bother...

    Old aerial photos

That's great about conservation groups buying land like that. And yes, I see that there really wasn't much in the way of regulation to stop clearcutting etc... back in the day. My thought on that is that while we are recognizing the harmful effects of sprawl and many are trying to combat it...

Why can't I lose this gut?

I'm sorry but I still don't believe it. I could say I walk 10 mph and throw some numbers around that support that calculation. It doesn't mean the numbers are actually based in reality. There's no way for you to verify it. And those online calorie calculators are misleading. Each person's...

Why can't I lose this gut?

I don't think I'm cruel, I was just trying to clear up why you were in wendy's after saying you haven't eaten there in a while. And if you eat as much fast food as you say you do, then I'll bet you were tempted while in there. What would you think if you caught a recovering drug addict in a...

when was this? I have photographic evidence of you leaving wendy's just a few days ago:

Why can't I lose this gut?

Well a few posts ago you said that this winter you did a lot of "walking at approx 3mph." I hate to be the one to break it to you but 3 mph does not translate to 15 min per mile. It means 20 minutes per mile. There is a huge difference in terms of effort between 3 and 4 mph. This is why I...

    Secret of the painted rock

Looks a bit rugged to me. I've never heard of the author but he also wrote pine-inspired books such as, "The lost mission of captain carranza", "Mystery of the jersey devil", and "The treasure of tucker's island." Amazon pegs the reading level as 9-12.

Why can't I lose this gut?

I'd say the 2-3.5 mph is an excellent number. In my experience if I include rest stops and everything I end up with an average of a little over 2 mph for the whole day, but actually walking it's more like 3-3.75 mph.

Why can't I lose this gut?

When I hiked the AT, my partner and I tried to do a mile in 15 minutes. We did it but were practically running. It is not a normal hiking pace. We did have packs on, but they were light. This weekend I did an overnight on the McKenzie river trail in OR and topped out at 3.8 mph, and that...

Why can't I lose this gut?

I'm sorry but I have a hard time believing this. What is your margin of error on this calculation, and how did you arrive at this number? It's called long pants and DEET.

And don't forget to bring an extra pair of shoes in case yours get worn out from all the shuffling. And watch out for rabid dogs.
