Thanks for finding that article and bringing it to our attention. I'd heard of the "Hermit" but had no idea he was such a keen observer of nature. The obvious comparison to Thoreau was conspicuous by its absence - and I'll have to cogitate some more before I'm not sure if that was or was not warranted.

I didn't get the impression that he was defending it per-se.
What's interesting is that after 20 years the book was out of print and hard to find. Now, 70 years later, you can buy it in any book store in NJ.
