Any ideas what kind of bird this is?

I'm thinking a cooper hawk but not positive. It was by far the biggest we've seen. It also let me get within 5 ft of it and didn't fly away until I let the dog out.

I always thought the red tail was pretty unmistakable. We have a ton of red tails around here, two that regular stalk our coop. It didn't look like the typical red tail we see around here. I was thrown off by how close it let me get. We have about 2 acres of land, long and narrow, our house its towards the front, coop towards the back and the hawks will usually take off once I open the door and step out.

He does look like a Cooper Hawk with the horizontal stripes. Red tails usually have verticle on their "tail". Very pretty and nice shot!

yes, that is a juvenile red tail. those very narrow tail band give way to full red in the adult. the belly band in the second shot is quite typical.
a coopers has much wider tail bands
