The first I heard was in an email I received from a friend today.

"New Law: If a patrol car is pulled over to the side of the road, you must change to the next lane (away from the stopped vehicle) or slow down to 20 mph under the posted speed limit if traffic prevents you from moving into that lane. Every state except NY, Hawaii, Maryland and D.C. has adopted this law."

It's not the same as pulling to the shoulder for an emergency vehicle. More info at this link;

Yes, Pennsylvania adopted a similar law last year but theirs goes even farther. It applies to ALL emergency vehicles - tow trucks, ambulances, fire trucks, etc.

Oh, I don't mind doing it....except I have to go through Manchester Townships police gauntlet twice a day. They are, and have been, notorius for bleeding us dry of our money via speed traps etc.

I had a run in with them 30 years ago and they were the same then. I had a CB and one of them was reading a newspaper along the road in his car. I mentioned it on my CB and in no time at all he was pulling me over giving me a hard time. They monitored channel 19 years ago and so did the police station. That was why he was so mad at me.

NJ was one of only two states that did not have that law until it was passed.

That is the truth. I had to pass thru Manchester twice a day as well. I have contributed a couple of times :siren:

It's just common sense driving to move to the other lane if it's safe to do so. The slowing to 20mph might be asking for trouble though, especially on the GSP with a NY'er impatient to get to AC behind you. They don't have this law in NY, and I doubt they know about ours.

That law was announced in the NJ register in October, 09. There was a percieved problem with truckers trying to get as close as they can to a Tropper that pulled over a vehicle on the side of a highway. I don't know how real this was, if there are any teamsters out there that can add to this, please do so. Another law that will take effect in Oct. 2010, is that your car must be snow free when in operation.I can agree with this because you can have snow from your car blowing into the path of others. It appears that you can be stopped for the smallest amount of snow on your car, even if that snow will never affect another vehicle. Another way that the Peoples Republic of NJ can make money.

Rob from work was stopped in Cherry Hill during the recent snow because his roof rack was holding snow. The officer was not nice about it but did not do anything.

Being from NY, I can tell you that you CAN be stopped if not moving over when you see a LEO pulling someone over. in NY, the good thing is that the officer(s) are usually so busy with the moke they pulled over they will not stop you. The bad news is, that in NJ, there are usually many more patrol cars than are needed and one WILL pull away from the stop to get you....
