Bombing Range Road?

I was at pakim pond when I heard what sounded like bombs dropping somewhere close by. I didn't know if it was something by range road, but after looking at other posts, it seems Warren grove was the actual source of the noise. I have always wondered what the DoD was doing out there and I'm excited to finally learn about bombing range road. I traveled out there and saw the best pygmy pines I've ever found. Anyway, I guess my question is, is there still any predictable time to catch these bombs from afar? The sources I found were years old and I'm not sure if they are still doing it as often.

Apu, towards the end of the week and usually after nine in the morning. I had great luck catching the practice at Warren Grove several Friday mornings. Watch your head with the A10s, they fly below the trees at times.

Explosions could be heard clearly in Tabernacle this morning (approx. 7:00 AM). Didn't sound at all like a distant turkey hunter.

I don't know how much walking around you did while you were there. But next time you are there. Standing in the parking lot, on bombing range road, face north. Looking down the hill at that sandy trail, you will see a lowland area with bigger pines. From where you are standing you can see a hill on the other side of the taller trees. Some minor bushwhacking will get you through those trees to the hill on the other side. Go to the top. There is a small branched off trail on the left side at the top. Walk that path until you can see 360 degrees. Great view of bombing there too. Plus you can see the little valley and hill with the tower. and the 360 view is incredible. You can see for miles in every direction. Enjoy!!!!

Any time. Enjoy. Gotta get back there myself. As you can tell from my avatar... I love spots that make you feel like you are on top of the world. And we have more of those here in our Pine Barrens than most people know. Like Guy always says in many of the threads on this site. GPS can be a great thing. :cool:

The spots I have seen in order of favorites... Forked RiverMountain Preacher's Hill Apple Pie Hill Bloody Ridge Berkley Recreation Area. Those first 2 are a toss up... :cool: Anyone else have Hills in our Pines that they would like to add to the list?...

Another off Oswego Rd. Walk up gun club property boundary line. I don't consider property lines as tresspassing. It's actually a cycle trail on the edge of the hill, the actual location of my marker may be off a little. You can see the rise of the hill as your approaching from Oswego Rd. Not far and on one of the cycle trails are blueberries the size of your thumb nail. There's an old flowing water course if your familiar with the area.

There's another off Allen Rd that the Lidar map shows the road to. The view is not nearly as good as the others because of the pine trees. We call it Atlantic city hill because the only limited view is to the SE.

BTW, the locations mentioned are on public land so your not tresspassing.

Thanks for the coordinates. I love Warren Grove. I get there as often as I can. The Pygmy Pines are awesome. I see both of those spots are due just west of there. I will have to check them out. Thanks again. I will post pics after I go. :cool:

Jersey devil I know your Spring Hill spot well.Walked up on a nekked girl there once in a lawn chair.She covered up real fast and her old man looked pissed I showed up.Oh well,thats the breaks.There are several nice views in that area,I"m sure you know Bear swamp hill to the south right around the corner.Here is a nice view of a bowl that cuts you off from all manmade objects such as towers you see in the other views.

I have never been to the view out by Allen road,I"ll have to check that out.
Another real nice view of Coyle field and surroundings.You can drive here but it will pinstripe your vehicle right.

I remember many moons ago walking this cycle trail and pushing west in various places and getting some nice private views off to the west but if there have been no fires there since then these may be gone now.

and last but not least some really nice views to be had from this ridge if you don't mind the walk and also up and down the straight road you see and the thin cycle trail that leads in.(it's just a foot trail now and the ends are sorta camouflaged so you have to look for them.

I'm familiar with those spots listed except for the 2 off 539. I believe you can see that ridge from 539 going South. I've been down that straight road a few times, but not lately and for some reason that ridge eluded me. I also want to check out the one Glenn talks about North of the bombing range. I might have been there a long time ago, just can't remember. I spent a lot of time around the bombing range well before 911 when it was much much smaller than it is now.

I wouldn't make a special trip to AC hill I mention off Allen rd. The view is really limited because of the trees, no Pygmy's here. However if in the area, why not.

Very easy to get to. Take Lacey Road to Bamber Lake. Turn onto Lake Road. Park at parking lot at Bamber Lake. Walk Lake Road to end turn left onto Brinley. Then turn right onto Capshaw. Trail head is at end of Capshaw. Follow trail to huge sand pit. stay to right at sand pit. When you get to other side it is easy to go straight. Dont do that. You will see trail pick up again on right hand side. Follow trail to end(Wrights Road, narrow dirt road). Left onto Wrights road. That will take you to "Serengetti Plains" on southside of Preacher's Hill. Only 2 mile hike from trail head. Worth the trip!!! Park at these coordinates
