at a job the rain this year washed out the over flow of the pond. he wants to bring it up 8" to where it was. there are 100's of koi in it and hes worried the lower level may kill them when it freezes.
Any ideas since many of you know a lot about cranberry bogs. (i do not need a gate)

ANY IDEAS ON MATERIALS OR HOW-TO WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

A simple fix would be to copy one of the water control structures that can be seen at any cranberry bog. The water depth can be controlled by adding boards or removing them. The wood structures aren't very complicated to build - several upright posts with boards slide into between them. If you have time, take a ride to Whitesbogs, I know for sure that they are used there. (An emergency fix could be a pond heater.) You could borrow the beaver from Webb's Mill, that critter is a qualified dam builder.:)

what are the small dams called. i know they are not dams, but i can't remember the right word?
and Gibby, i think the beaver would eat the koi. the cranes are already a problem :)

Karl, here is a picture of the bog water control structure. I know it is not a dike, which is the earth that surrounds the bog. You can go to virtually any bog to see one close up. Double Trouble, Whitesbog, Cloverdale Farm, Stafford Forge, Friendship or the commercial bogs along rt 563.

Karl,

Guy and I saw some cranberry farm dams under construction and it gave me an idea. Construct a simple box out of pressure treated wood. One end has the in-flow height that is the level of the pond that you want. You bury it with sand in the middle. See this sketch I made.

Or....build a small dam to the height you want out of sandbags. Stack them up in a little wedge, so they taper away from the center on both sides.

When you see them on both side of a road this is what is under you.
