Can anyone tell me where Burnt Cabin Branch is?It should be in Sims Place or very close to it.I have found an old stream draining south into Oswego through what is now Sims Place but it is nameless on the map. There appears to be visible on modern topos and aerial sections of a natural stream draining the western bogs into Oswego but for the most part it is destroyed by bogs.Is this burnt cabin Branch?

Bob,

What is the name of the map that had the trip route of the "Prince" on it where he traveled to all the high points? You have posted things from it so you must have the map. I have it but can't find it.

I believe it's the branch that on birds eye appears to be totally canalized now and drians the western bogs at sims place.the topo and 95 aerials show natural sections but on birds eye they all appear to be canals now.

Could be Al. I vaguely remember the name, but not the location. I had a hell of a good time looking through Ben's maps for it though. I found a "Burnt Bridge Branch" west of the Hedger house on the Rancocas, an "Indian Cabin Creek" down by Gabe, a "Cave Cabin Branch" in the forked River mountains, and an "Indian Jacks" branch that I will not say where I found it. That is a challenge question.

The best place to look for your branch is...."Place Names in Burlington. County, New Jersey by Henry H. Bisbee"

Is that Indian Jack or Jake? Indian Jake Branch is in Greenwood Forest near Old Half Way. I explored it while looking for a Lawrence Line Stone that I never did find. I will find the info I have on it and post it.

Most definitely Indian Jack.

Al, I have been to Cave Cabin....it has some fairly steep sides, but no caves. Legend is that someone dug it out.

I searched the entire high resolution National Hydrology Database (NHD) for South Jersey and didn't find any "Burnt Cabin Branch". I found:

Burnt Bridge Branch
Burnt Meadow Brook
Burnt Mill Branch
Cabin Run
Cave Cabin Branch
Frame Cabin Run
Indian Cabin Creek
Spruce Cabin Run
Cabinfield Branch

Didn't find any "Indian Jack's Branch" either, just:

Indian Branch
Indian Brook
Indian Cabin Creek
Indian Creek
Indian Fields Branch
Indian Grave Brook
Indian Gut
Indian Kill
Indian Mills Brook
Indian Run

So I guess the USGS doesn't recognize either of these names today. Quite a few of the small streams in the area of Sim Place don't have names in the NHD (this is the same data I use to make my maps). The named ones that I see are:

Oswego River
Dry Branch
Plains Branch
Papoose Branch

If I had the time, it would be a fun project to do some research and add names to some of these little creeks.

This is a combined synopsis/solicitation for commercial items prepared in accordance with FAR Part 12 and supplemented with additional information included in this notice. This announcement constitutes the only solicitation; proposals are being requested and a written solicitation will NOT be issued. The 177th Fighter Wing has a requirement for clearing of vegetation at its Warren Grove Range, located at Route 539, Burlington County, New Jersey. The North American Industry Classification System Code (NAICS) for this work is 561730 with a small business size standard of $7 million dollars annually. This is a 100% small business set-aside. A firm fixed price contract will be awarded.

STATEMENT OF WORK

General Requirements:
The contractor shall furnish all transportation, skilled labor, supplies and wheeled ROWMAC rotary flail clearing equipment necessary to complete the statement of work in accordance with the conditions listed. The intended result is to provide Warren Grove Range personnel with areas (fire breaks) cleared of vegetation that they can continue to maintain with their own equipment.
Rotary flail mowing has proven to be the best clearing method due to 1) the complete chipping and removal of cut product, and 2) the limited slash fire fuel load created during mowing operations. Alternate methods such as the use of a rotary axe mower type head for clearing have not provided the desired result due to the limited diameter breast height (DBH) clearing capabilities. The contractor will comply with all applicable Federal, State, and local (to include NJANG) regulations, and environmental and occupational safety requirements.
Location:
Warren Grove Gunnery Range, Route 539, Burlington County, New Jersey
Description of Service:
Contractor shall mechanically clear and chip all trees while not destroying the root system. Remove all overhanging branches to a height of at least 12 feet and clear all vegetation in areas that have been designated as fire breaks by WG Range personnel. Clear, chip and remove vegetation to approximately a 15 foot maximum width from both sides of the road edge or a maximum of 25 feet from designated single side road edge. Range personnel or other authorized personnel under contract with the Range, shall mark out specific areas that are deemed environmentally sensitive and shall not be worked upon or mowed. Equipment to be utilized must be a wheeled machine in order to minimize impact upon the environmental habitats, as proven by past contracted practices.
The finished product must be able to be mowed by a wheeled tractor driven tow behind standard rotary cutter (i.e. Brush hog). The root system for all vegetation must be preserved; NO dozing or digging will be authorized.

Estimate:
Estimate is based on a per day amount which includes equipment and labor. The contractor will schedule the days to work with WG Range personnel; this schedule will be mission-based and subject to change at any time at no additional cost to the government. The entire job must be started no earlier than 1 November 2010 and completed no later than 31 December 2010 due to nesting season(s) for identified threatened/endangered species.
Experience:
Contractor must demonstrate past performance experience working in areas adjacent to wetlands and the pinelands of NJ, and in and around threatened and endangered species. Contractor shall provide references for up to three projects accomplished within the last three years. Provide contact information from each project to include name, number, project title, brief description and date of performance. Failure to include past performance information may result in your offer not being considered for award.
Scope:
A. 1. Clear vegetation along both sides of Newtown Road (1.5 miles) and Jim Roy Road (1.0 miles). (Note: all distances are estimated.)

2. Clear vegetation along the western side of the Range Property/ Burlington County boundary and then clear a 15 to 20 wide path westward to the Jim Roy Road (1.5 miles).

3. Clear vegetation to a DBH of 12 inches and below along both sides of Shamong Road (1.5 miles) between Burnt Cabin Road and Calico/Warren Grove Road.

4. Clear vegetation to a DBH of 12 inches and below along the eastern side of Shamong Road (1.5 miles) between Calico/Warren Grove Road and the Range property boundary line termination point north of Newtown Road.

5. Clear vegetation along the northern side of the fire plow line (future Fire Lane) which exists between Allen Road and Andrews Road. (1.0 miles).

6. Clear vegetation in the fire plow line area which exists north and parallel to the Calico/Warren Grove Road and in between the Lower Cabin Road and Allen Road (2.0 miles).

2. Re-establish the fire plow line (future Fire Lane) which exists between Allen Road and Andrews Road. (1.0 miles).

3. Establish a fire plow line in the cleared area which exists north and parallel to the Calico/Warren Grove Road and in between the Lower Cabin Road and Allen Road (2.0 miles).

Bob,

This map shows your Indian Jack in the Old Half way area; however, I have the Hanover Furnace survey notes of Joseph Cox and he calls in Indian Jake.

Cox survey showing Indian Jake. I have viewed another map that also has Indian Jake. I just need to find it. This says "Stone at the head of Indian Jake Branch."

That is the 1884 Whiting map, but it also is shown on the 1907 but for some reason that map is really poor.

It sounded familar to me but I think I was thinking of Burnt bridge branch behind New Lisbon hospital (as Bob had mentioned). You might be right Al that is exists near Sim's place but is not recognized on the USGS. There is a Horse limb branch near me that does not show up on the topos with that name (or any name).

The reason I believe it to be in the Sims Placxe area is because I have a map of the area here and it is obviously old because the bogs are not shown. Some of the stones on the maps have notation descrobing them as being near Burnt Cabin Branch and this would be in the sims place area. The only thing I can find is the remnants of a branch on the topos but when birds eyeing the area it appears to be all canals now.I noticed on some of the old maps on this site there is a branch there but no name given to it.I assume that must be burnt cabin branch and most likely any stones along it are probably gone. There are others in areas though that are still undisturbed so it's not a total loss:)

Al:

Bob gave you some sage advice: look in Bisbee. Here is what Doc has to say:

BURNT CABIN SWAMP (Bass River Township). A former swamp located on the north side of Oswego River between the mouth of Papposse Branch and Sim Place. Named prior to 1773 in a survey and found on the 1859 map. (p. 41)

And here is the map:

Detail_1859_Burlco_Map.jpg

While the map fails to indicate which stream is Burnt Cabin Branch, I think this detail will put you a lot closer to discerning where the watercourse is/was located.

Best regards,
Jerseyman
