herpetological falseoids (NOT factoids)

Yee Gods;
error upon error!

The outer surface of snake skin IS made of the same stuff as that of human skin: however, that's keratin (not carotene - a precursor of vitamin A).

And coral snakes are NOT found in New Jersey - although the scarlet snake, a non-poisonous coral snake mimic, has been found in the pine barrens.

AND, the coral snake, although quite poisonous (down south where it does live), has round pupils, not "catlike" pupils.

If such misinformation is, in fact, being disseminated at the camp, its naturalist is due for a bit of herpetological re-education!

Well...two posts saying my memory is correct, so I only need to watch out for rattlers when I walk :)

Guy, I think in the pine barrens you only have to be concerned with the rattlers. In north jersey I believe there are some copperheads in the mountain areas. Maybe the herp people can back me up on this, I don't know much about the north jersey area.

There was a correction in Fridays paper mentioning the fact that they had the snake part incorrect.
