The outer surface of snake skin IS made of the same stuff as that of human skin: however, that's keratin (not carotene - a precursor of vitamin A).
And coral snakes are NOT found in New Jersey - although the scarlet snake, a non-poisonous coral snake mimic, has been found in the pine barrens.
AND, the coral snake, although quite poisonous (down south where it does live), has round pupils, not "catlike" pupils.
If such misinformation is, in fact, being disseminated at the camp, its naturalist is due for a bit of herpetological re-education!
