Carranza and Along the JCRR

After a three week absence Jes and I returned to the pines early this morning to accomplish a few things. First, we wanted to see the "new" plaque at Carranza that the news article said was placed there last weekend. Well, as expected we could not find one. Did anyone see it, or was the article wrong?

We then did some searching for the mileposts on the JCRR and found the two cement bases we were looking for. We also found two guy wire posts along the tracks which may have been used to support one of the communication poles from the Blue Comet. Just a wild guess.

Guy, I had seen the plaque while driving by it last week. Maybe someone removed it to get a good shot of the monument. I think that the plaque was located in a poor location in that it would block good shots of the monument.

I have been in saltwater fishing mode since May and haven't posted much but my wife and I still walk each week night down here in Wharton.
I would like to proudly announce that we have our first batch of chiggers.
A light batch but they are officially out there.
The deer flies are abating and have passed the torch to the chiggers.

I left here late this afternoon while it was and had been raining heavy, and traveled to the Brooksbrae area to visit some places, and it had not rained at all there. It did not start until I left there around 7PM. Anyway, I was acquiring the GPS coordinates of the Mileposts along the tracks in the area and was able to do two of them easily.

I did some exploring up the tracks at Brooksbrae, and came upon some handiwork of a motorcyclist or a group of them. A very nice piece of work!

We walked through some area's that were good for chiggers, and it appears we came out of it clean.

Good to hear from you. I have not had any yet, but I have not been doing much out there in the last few weeks. Only walking the tracks which does have some places for them to be though.

There was also a flower of some sort with a note attached. It read - Young tree that shares a name with the engineer of the world record locomotive speed holder, 'Mallard'

Anyone know what that means?

In Britain a locomotive has a "driver" rather than an "engineer". The engineer of a locomotive is the gent who designed the thing, not he who drove it. As it happens, the engineer of the Mallard was Sir Herbet Nigel Gresley.

Now ... if we spell his name backwards we get "Yelserg Legin Tebreh"

Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley (19 June 1876 – 5 April 1941) was one of Britain's most famous Steam locomotive engineers who rose to become Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). He was the designer of some of the most famous steam locomotives in Britain including the LNER Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific engines, one of which, number 4468 Mallard, still holds the record for being the fastest steam locomotive in the world.

Thanks for clearing up the part about the engineer. That does definitely put a stop to my looking for a Duddington tree. The rest of it as you've said...is no help at all :-P

We have discussed the pennies before here. It may be because the pennies of the Mexican children built the monument that people or persons are placing them there.
