He actually cut a hole in the side of the house to get the furniture in. He took us around the side and pointed out where it was cut. It looked like it could be removed again if the furniture needed to be removed.

I do not know Tim Hart. And yes, I read where Rudy had died.

Hah, that's funny about cutting the hole, although I can't imagine what that did to the structure, haha.

I don't now when the private residence sign went up, but it belongs to the county now, so its being protected, and the structure is actually in great shape thanks to Rudy, so it will eventually be open to the public

Thanks for the link!

It is interesting to note that even thought the article states he sold most of the property to the New Jersey Conservation Foundation in the 70s, it turns out they turned around and sold it to the state. The property he sold which surrounds the house is now part of Bass River State Forest. To be exact it was sold to the state on 4/14/1980.

Nice article. I don't believe I have that one.

As far as I understand it, the New Jersey Conservation Foundation had first dibs on purchasing the rest of the property, but they waived that to the county. I have official documents to that affect somewhere.

Thanks for posting Steve. All I can say is the state owns all of the property from those years. The below photo is quite interesting for the fact that the above article states that the state had acquired it in April 1980 but the below survey is dated May 1 of that year. It seems odd the state would survey AFTER acquiring.

You seem quite knowledgeable on these things???

Thanks Guy. I'm fairly steeped in Ocean County history because I've been collecting and digitizing archives from our county for quite awhile, and have also been writing and publishing articles on my website. That's all been going very well, and I'm always on the lookout for new archives to scan. I just finished scanning Island Heights' historical societies collection, and I'm writing a report on it now, then on to other collections!

I'm also always looking for people to write for the website if you know of anyone whose interested in that sort of thing.

When it comes to spending our tax dollars, I'm not surprised at anything the government does, lol, but you're right. One would think that the survey would be done before the sale. Interesting point.
